Motion sickness (Sea sick, Car Sickness, Air Sickness) - Medical Encyclopedia for Nursing Students
Motion sickness, also called seasickness, carsickness, or airsickness depending on what one has been traveling in, is a condition in which the endolymph (the fluid found in the semicircular canals of the inner ears) becomes 'stirred up', causing confusion between the difference between apparent perceived movement (none or very little), and actual movement.
Other cures for motion sickness rely on medication.
Many 'cures' and preventatives for motion sickness have been proposed at various times.

Embolism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Blood clots form the most common embolic material by far: other possible embolic materials include fat globules (a fat embolism), air bubbles (an air embolism), septic emboli (containing pus and bacteria), or amniotic fluid.
In medicine, an embolism occurs when an object (the embolus, plural emboli) migrates from one part of the body (through circulation) and cause(s) a blockage (occlusion) of a blood vessel in another part of the body.
Emboli often have more serious consequences when they occur in the so-called "end-circulation": areas of the body that have no redundant blood supply, such as the brain, heart, and lungs.

 Venous Air Embolism
During spontaneous respiration, slow entrainment of air that causes obstruction of 10% of the pulmonary circulation causes a "gasp" reflex that results in chest pain and tachypnea.
If a large volume of air has been entrained, and surgical conditions permit (i.e., the head is not in pins), positioning the patient in the left lateral decubitus position will help to keep air in the right atrium from entering the ventricle.
Morbidity and mortality from air embolism are directly related to the size of the embolus and the rate of entry.

MASSIVE SYSTEMIC AIR EMBOLISM FOLLOWING A BLUNT CHEST INJURY
Needle venting of air from the heart by the surgeon, manual cardiac massage, and pressor therapy to increase coronary perfusion pressure beside right decubitus position are standard cardiopulmonary resuscitative measures for the victims of left heart air embolism.
The initiation of systemic air embolism in a patient with chest trauma after mechanical ventilation is attributed to bronchopulmonary pressure gradient that favors transmission of air through a traumatic bronchial to pulmonary venous communication, and this has been proved by experimental study on animals.
Systemic air embolism is often noticed after the initiation of mechanical ventilation, so anesthesiologists must be aware that the patient with chest trauma is at risk of systemic air embolism during mechanical ventilation, especially with high-peak airway pressure.

Air Embolism during Calibration of Invasive Blood Pressure Monitoring Systems
There are methods of applying reference pressures for those special circumstances that minimize the risk of air embolism.
(For example, a small amount of air can be introduced into the system, even with the patient stopcock closed during calibration, if the calibration pressure exceeds that of the pressure infuser flushing system.
Apparently, a bolus of air was infused into the patient, either because the stopcock between the catheter and pressure tubing had not been closed or because air had been inadvertently introduced into the transducer dome or continuous flushing device, then fast-flushed into the patient's artery after calibration.

Air embolism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Recompression is the only lasting treatment of an air embolism.
An air embolism, or more generally gas embolism, is a medical condition caused by gas bubbles in the bloodstream.
Air embolism can occur whenever a blood vessel is open and a pressure gradient exists favoring entry of gas.

 SAFELANDING.NET > Medical > Air Sickness
Air sickness is one aspect of a general travel sickness, caused by the conflict between what the eye sees and conveys to the brain, and the other senses of the brain that control our balance.
In the air, a total blue sky is not very good, and a fixed land view or reference point is required, so as one way to try and avoid 'air' sickness, sit by the window and look constantly at fixed reference points outside, and never try to read.
Motion sickness drugs are available from most chemists.

 Air Embolism via Arterial Catheter
Cerebral air embolism in an anaesthetised or sedated patient may, therefore, be hard or impossible to detect as the patient is unable to report changes in the sensorium or visual defects and abnormal motor function may not be detectable.
Air introduced into the arterial tree may cause cerebral air embolism in a retrograde fashion, via a patent foramen ovale (or other septal defect) or, in the case of large volumes, via the pulmonary vasculature.
Cerebral air embolism may cause a spectrum of adverse effects ranging from the absence of or very mild symptoms and signs to severe neurological injury or death.

Nursing: Managing a venous air embolism
A patient with a venous air embolism will exhibit respiratory distress, increased heart rate, cyanosis, a drop in BP, and a sudden change in level of consciousness and may complain of back or shoulder pain.
The physician may aspirate the air from the right atrium using an intracardiac needle.
If the patient coughs, sneezes, cries, laughs, or takes a deep breath, the change in intrathoracic pressure can draw 10 to IS cc of air into the venous system as a bolus.

 Facts on Farts
Most of the air we swallow, especially the oxygen component, is absorbed by the body before the gas gets into the intestines.
But the relative proportions of these gases that emerge from our anal opening depend on several factors: what we ate, how much air we swallowed, what kinds of bacteria we have in our intestines, and how long we hold in the fart.
Chemical reactions between stomach acid and intestinal fluids may produce carbon dioxide, which is also a component of air and a product of bacterial action.

 SUMMARY OF CONSENSUS OPINION
Room air and gas emboli are associated with uterine surgical procedures, not specific devices.
The panel concluded that knowledgeable physicians and medical societies have a duty to further educate and warn practicing hysteroscopists and anesthesiologists about the risks of gas and room air embolism associated with hysteroscopic surgery and thereby decrease the risk of serious sequelae.
Room air embolism in hysteroscopy, by contrast, arises from the active or passive intra-venous entrainment of air introduced into the uterus via a piston-like action of the instruments during insertion, non-purged air in the fluid in-flow line, a patulous cervix open to air subsequent to disruption of uterine sinusoids, and cervical lacerations associated with dilatation.

 Postgraduate Medicine: Motion sickness
It is now fairly widely accepted that motion sickness is caused by conflicting inputs between the visual and vestibular systems, or between the two vestibular systems, and comparison of those inputs with the individual's expectations derived from previous experience (5).
Surveys have found that car sickness occurs in 58% of children, space-motion sickness occurs in 50% of shuttle astronauts, and incapacitating airsickness occurs in 29% of airline pilots (1).
Some researchers suggest that there is another, distinct syndrome of motion sickness that lacks these gastrointestinal complaints and is instead characterized by drowsiness, headache, apathy, depression, and generalized discomfort (4).

Air purifier - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Air purifiers are particularly beneficial for allergy sufferers and asthmatics or those who wish to reduce second-hand smoke.
While HEPA filters are extremely effective, they are also extremely expensive, and replacements can often cost nearly as much as the air purifier itself.
Although air purifiers strive to make the air as clean as possible, no commercial air purifier is capable of producing a room as clean as needed in situations requiring an especially clean environment, such as hospital surgical rooms or sensitive manufacturing like optics or computer processors.

Comfortaire Air Mattress and Air Beds at Cloud 9 Sleep Shop
Dual hand-held controls (on dual-chamber air systems) allow each sleeper to infinitely adjust the firmness of his or her side of the bed to whatever level is most comfortable, without affecting their sleeping partner.
The air support sleep system, however, provides even support for body weight, helping your spine to keep its natural alignment.
With a dual air system, each of the air chambers in the bed is, in a sense, an independent mattress; therefore, when one person moves, gets up, or rolls over, this motion is not transferred to the other side of the bed.
