Vision Impairment (part 1), NCBDDD, CDC
Impaired vision can affect a child’s cognitive, emotional, neurological, and physical development by possibly limiting the range of experiences and the kinds of information a child is exposed to.
The risk of vision loss from many of these conditions can often be reduced if the condition is found early and treated.
There are different ways of describing how severe a person's vision loss is. The World Health Organization defines "low vision" as visual acuity between 20/70 and 20/400, with the best possible correction, or a visual field of 20 degrees or less.

 MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia: Vision problems
Blurred vision is the loss of sharpness of vision and the inability to see small details.
Safety measures may be necessary if you have any vision problems.
Presbyopia -- difficulty focusing on objects that are close.

 Low Vision
Low Vision Specialists are licensed Doctors of Optometry or Ophthalmology, who are skilled in the examination, treatment and management of patients with visual impairments not fully treatable by medical, surgical or convention eyewear or contact lenses.
Low Vision is a bilateral impairment to vision that significantly impairs the functioning of the patient and cannot be adequately corrected with medical, surgical, therapy, conventional eyewear or contact lenses.
A low vision refraction determines the measurement of the patient's prescription by special techniques which may include changing the lighting levels, testing through filters and using larger changes which may be easier for you to view.

 Loss of vision
Blindness is the loss of vision, not correctable with lenses.
Most serious forms of vision loss are painless, and the absence of pain in no way diminishes the urgent need to get medical care.
Many forms of vision loss only have a short amount of time where they can be successfully treated.

 My temporary vision loss BBSHTCM
Fortunately for me my vision loss was not associated with a migraine headache.
In hindsight I've had these vision loss occurrences very slightly even in my mid twenties when I was in peak physical condition.
In his case however there was almost always a fairly severe migraine headache accompanying the vision loss.

 Vision impairment - neurological
Neurological vision impairment (ABI VI) is vision loss caused by damage to the areas of the brain that are responsible for sight.
Fluctuating vision - this means the impairment is variable; for example, the person may be able to see something one day, but not the next.

Disability Info: Visual Impairments Fact Sheet (FS13)
Visual impairment is the consequence of a functional loss of vision, rather than the eye disorder itself.
Low vision applies to all individuals with sight who are unable to read the newspaper at a normal viewing distance, even with the aid of eyeglasses or contact lenses.
The effect of visual problems on a child's development depends on the severity, type of loss, age at which the condition appears, and overall functioning level of the child.

 low vision
Loss of peripheral vision causes a restricted field of vision.
Low vision is a significant reduction of visual function that cannot be fully corrected by ordinary glasses, contact lenses, medical treatment and/or surgery.
Low vision affects people of all ages...in the home, on the job, and at school.
http://www.low-vision.org/low-vision.html

 Diabetic Retinopathy
If the patient is unable to see his or her feet, care by their physician, podiatrist or family may be needed to monitor the health of their extremities.
Color vision may be mildly affected along the yellow-blue axis.
This is caused by a paralysis of one of the six muscles in control eye movements.
http://www.lowvision.org/diabetic_retinopathy.htm

The Emotional Impact of Vision Loss
The identity of the person who loses vision is changed from his previous identity to that of "the blind," and he is forced to cope with whatever this means for his interactions with family, friends and others in the community.
Self-esteem is affected by the loss of communication or other skills (Beach, Robinet, and Hakim-Larson, 1995) but regaining these skills via alternative methods can be difficult if the feelings about vision loss and related issues have not been addressed.
How these children use their vision varies, and this affects how they react to loss of that vision when complications arise.
http://www.growingstrong.org/blindness/psych/aa021201a.htm

 RRTC:Information and Resource Referral Project
although reduced central or reading vision is common, low vision may also result from decreased side (peripheral) vision, a reduction of loss of color vision, or the eye's inability to properly adjust to light, contrast or glare.
when the best vision obtained in the better eye, is 20/200 or less, or when, despite the activity attained the field of vision of the better eye is 20 degreees or less.
Blindness is defined as visual acuity of less than 3/60 (0.05) or corresponding visual field loss in the better eye with best possible correction.

FDA Probes Reports of Vision Loss Linked to Impotence Drugs
The vision problems seem to be linked to a condition called nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, or NAION, which causes sudden vision loss when blood flow to the optic nerve is blocked.
Word of the possible link between vision problems and the impotence drugs comes at a time when the drug industry is under criticism for not disclosing serious side effects associated with certain drugs, such as the painkillers Vioxx and Bextra.

RedNova News - Health - Drug Puts Brakes on Vision Loss
One simple way the researchers measured vision loss is by counting the number of letters on a standard eye chart that become illegible to patients over the course of the study.
This slowing of vision impairment began as early as six weeks into therapy, and continuing through to study's end at 54 weeks.
But Chang also pointed out that "there is more research that needs to be done because, despite treatment, approximately 40 percent of study eyes continued [on] to legal blindness by one year."

 Adjusting to Vision Loss
As a person with vision loss you may have a caregiver with whom you can discuss what is needed and what modifications would be most useful.
Open and honest communication is the best way to ensure that the needs and expectations of both the person with vision loss and the carer are met.
Be sensitive to that fact, and do not take decisions on necessary modifications without discussing them with the person you are caring for.

Understanding Vision Loss from Pathological Myopia
The best way to reduce the risk of vision loss is to have regular dilated retinal examinations, and to seek immediate eye care if you have any flashes, floaters or decrease in your vision.
LASIK or laser refractive surgery has not been as effective in the highly myopic corrections, as it has in the lower ranges of myopia.
Most patients respond well to low vision care and low vision aids including magnifiers and CCTVs.

Dr. Koop - Surgery Helps Those With Vision Loss
AMD results in loss of vision in the center of a person's visual field.
The loss of central vision makes it difficult or impossible to do activities that require detail vision, such a sewing or reading.
The second part of the surgery involves rotating the eye to compensate for the ensuing tilt in the patient's visual field.

AMD patients lose their central vision but still have peripheral vision.
The 12-hour self-management program is especially effective for depressed patients and helps reduce the incidence of depression in AMD patients over time, say researchers at the University of California, San Diego Shiley Eye Center.
As we continue to seek effective treatments and cures for AMD, we have made it an immediate priority to help patients develop the confidence and skills to continue leading fulfilling lives despite their impaired vision," Dr. Stuart I. Brown, director of the Shiley Eye Center, said in a prepared statement.

Early Treatment Can Prevent Severe Vision Loss in Premature Infants
Visual activity of all infants was checked at 6 months of age, and structural outcomes were examined at 6 and 9 months of age.
Using both old and new criteria, researchers were able to identify which premature infants enrolled in the study were at highest risk for blindness.
Results of their study, published in the December issue of the Archives of Ophthalmology, show that early treatment significantly reduced the likelihood of poor vision from 19.5 to 14.5 percent at about one year

U of M researcher says Viagra may cause permanent vision loss in some men
The condition, nonarteritic ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), described as "stroke of the eye," occurs when blood flow is cut off to the optic nerve, which injures the nerve and results in permanent vision loss.
"For years, we've known that some men who take Viagra will experience temporary color changes in their vision and see things as blue or green," said Howard Pomeranz, M.D., associate professor of ophthalmology at the University of Minnesota Medical School.
"NAION is a much more serious condition because it can lead to permanent vision loss."
