Topic: Viral classifications

 Untitled Document
Our research has a clear and direct impact on strategic aspects of viral replication which includes as goals the development of realistic antiviral therapies, better definition of drug action, new drug discovery, and the development of effective means by which drug resistance in patient isolated virus may be directly examined.
The HIV Research Laboratory (HRL) has focused on aggressive, fundamental research of essential viral replication pathways, with emphasis on research directions which have potential for development of potent new antiviral molecules and/or therapeutic strategies.
This approach has been justified given the enormity of the HIV pandemic, the many recent reports from the United States that most patient-isolated virus is resistant to at least one antiretroviral drug, and the success of the HIV Unit in defining important new key molecules.

Viral etiology of human cancer: a historical perspective
Since our purpose is, to some extent, focused on the evolution of methodologies which cancer researchers utilized in attempts to verify the hypothesis, one should emphasize that the approach of Rous and his followers was essentially based on establishing the difference between transmission of tumors and leukemias by cell transplants, i.e.

 Evolutionary Responses to Parasites
The main source on this hypothesis is probably Nesse and Williams (1994); Nesse may have written something more recent and more focused on the viral theory of cancer.
Background Infections in early childhood may prevent allergies in later life.
A specific instance of the hypothesis is that a "simian virus known as SV40 has been associated with a number of rare human cancers.

The term "clinical" is used to emphasize the modification's intent: to serve as a useful tool in the area of classification of morbidity data for indexing of medical records, medical care review, and ambulatory and other medical care programs, as well as for basic health statistics.
The disease classification has been expanded to include health-related conditions and to provide greater specificity at the fifth-digit level of detail.
To describe the clinical picture of the patient, the codes must be more precise than those needed only for statistical groupings and trend analysis.

The use of decongestant and antibiotic therapy is discussed in Medical Care and Medications.

An auto or serum inoculation (internal body defense or injected/oral) is a brilliant method to prevent or subdue a viral infection in the future no matter how intense that particular virus' assault.
If you listen very closely, you will hear that most patients, with any chronic illness, think it began with some other illness or mechanical injury.
This has led many to think that all illnesses, even if they are not a virus can be cured with one pill.

Viral vectors are often the basis for gene therapies that in their simplest form attempt to cure genetic defects by providing non-mutated copies of a damaged gene to an organism.
There are no cures for viral infections, due in part to the difficulty of developing drugs that adversely affect only the virus and not the host.
Accordingly, preventative measures such as vaccines play an important role in the treatment of viral diseases.

The symptoms are similar to those of heart attack, and include chest pain and abnormal heart rhythms.
In many cases, the condition can't be prevented, but prompt treatment of infections (such as pneumonia) will reduce the risk of bacterial pericarditis.

 Chronic Hepatitis
The validity of the conventional classification has been evaluated by a comparative study of chronic viral hepatitis B and C. 130 biopsies from 110 patients with chronic hepatitis C (CH-C) proven serologically by antibodies (second generation testing) were compared with 105 biopsies from 73 patients with chronic hepatitis B (CH-B).
The classification of chronic hepatitis distinguishing benign chronic persistent hepatitis from severe chronic active hepatitis was constructed without knowledge of well-defined aetiological factors.
The pathologist must correlate the clinical history, serologic studies, and biopsy findings to complete the diagnosis.

Q: For all the bacteria we've been learning about...do we need to know all the specific different names of bacteria in each classification, or just know the general information on the group as a whole and then obviously the ones like thio- meaning reducing sulfur?
A: You need to know "...mainly that the viral classifactions are based on certain factors like what type of genetic material they use DNA/RNA or whether the virus is envolped or not"...

 Proto-Oncogenes and Cancer
Although there are numerous examples of each classification of proto-oncogene, the lists here are by no means exhaustive.
At some frequency the integration process leads to rearrangement of the viral genome and the consequent incorporation of a portion of the host genome into the viral genome.
Occasionally this transduction process leads to the virus acquiring a gene from the host that is normally involved in cellular growth control.

 Virus classification
Viruses can be classified in several ways, such as by their geometry, by whether they have envelopes, by the identity of the host organism they can infect, by mode of transmission, or by the type of disease they cause.
It should be noted that none of these classifications are expected to be phylogenetic, as viruses may not share a common origin.
The most useful classification is probably by the type of nucleic acid the virus contains and its mode of expression.

 NSC Project 2003280
The RNase H recruiting power of the modified AONs/RNA hybrids raises important questions on the relation between thermodynamic stability/flexibility of hybrid duplexes and the structure/dynamic vis-à-vis recognition and structural tolerance by the enzyme, which should be rationally tackled in order to design effective antisense oligos as RNase H recruiting agent.
RNase H, an endogenous enzyme, promotes cleavage of the viral mRNA in a catalytic manner via formation of the heteroduplexes with complementary antisense oligonucleotides, which is one of the recently exploited strategies to downregulate genetic information to treat viral infections.
