2004.05.16: (Fact Sheet) FDA Review of HIV Drugs
What drugs can be reviewed through this pathway?
Today's action encourages the development and provides expedited review for applications from brand-name companies (research and development based companies that hold the original patent for the individual drugs used to make up the FDC) for FDC and co-packaged HIV therapy drugs composed of drugs previously approved by FDA.
A bioavailability study is needed to show that the blood levels of the products when used in combination are at levels comparable to that achieved by the drugs used alone.

In addition, pharmacists will give patients the medication guide when the drug is dispensed.
This safety issue is addressed in a black box warning on the drug's label for health professionals and explained in a Medication Guide brochure for patients.
The supplemental application was filed in March 2002, based on data from the International Suicide Prevention Trial (InterSePT), the first study to prospectively evaluate a drug for ability to reduce the risk of suicidal behavior.

Journal of Medical Internet Research - Cyberpharmacies and the role of the US Food And Drug Administration
Under many of these laws, to receive a prescription drug for the first time, a patient generally must be physically examined by a licensed health care practitioner who determines the appropriate treatment and issues a prescription for an FDA-approved drug.
The prescribing requirement is based on the principle that certain drugs have risks of such significance associated with them that they should be administered only under the supervision and recommendation of a "learned intermediary" - that is, a licensed practitioner with the education and training necessary to oversee the administration of potentially harmful drug products.
Consumers buy drugs on the Internet for different reasons, and some may be targets of unscrupulous business practices, such as the selling of unsafe, unapproved, expired, counterfeit, or otherwise illegal drugs.

SCIENCE POLICY: ON THE US FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION
In important progress that is largely attributable to the Food and Drug Administration Modernization Act, the agency has adopted a more streamlined approach to clinical development -- for example, through the use of surrogate markers for accelerated approval or approval on the basis of a single multicenter clinical trial.
On display in the relationship between doctors and drug companies are the grandeur and weaknesses of the medical profession -- its noble aspirations and its continuing inability to fulfill them.
5) Yet the major problem with the current system for ensuring the safety of medications is that drug manufacturers are largely responsible for collecting, evaluating, and reporting data from postmarketing studies of their own products.

FDA's counsel accused of being too close to drug industry Daniel Troy, chief counsel to the US Food and Drug Administration, is under fire for inviting drug companies to inform him of lawsuits against them so the FDA could help in their defense.
The federal agency also said it would review other classes of drugs on the market, including the popular Cox-2 inhibitor drugs, such as Pfizer Inc.'s Celebrex and Bextra drugs, which are used for treating the pain and inflammation associated with arthritis and some other medical conditions.

Definition: US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
The branch of the US Department of Health and Human Services charged with ensuring the safety and effectiveness of new drugs before they can go on the market.
The FDA relies on the results of clinical trials that provide reliable information about a treatment’s effects on humans to decide whether or not new drugs should be approved.
When considering a new drug, the FDA faces two challenges: first, making sure that the drug is safe and effective before it is made widely available; and second, ensuring that drugs that show promise are made available as quickly as possible to the people they might help.

 FDA Industry Systems
FDA Industry Systems (FIS) is a gateway for making submissions to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), including registrations, listings, and other notifications.
FIS has been available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, since October 16, 2003 6:00 P.M. FIS was created, in part, in response to the Bioterrorism Act of 2002, which gave high priority to improved information management to help protect the food supply.
The Act requires that FDA develop two systems: one to support the registration of facilities that manufacture, process, pack, or hold food products intended for consumption in the United States and one to receive prior notice before food is imported or offered for import into the United States.
