Numerous studies have suggested that passive smoking can be harmful to human health, however the level of harm is controversial with research from alternative sources suggesting that the risk may not be as high as otherwise predicted.
In the 1930s Nazi medical and military leaders became concerned that tobacco might prove a hazard to human health, concluding that the "extraordinary rise in tobacco use" was "the single most important cause of the rising incidence of lung cancer".
