 Martyn Jacques
Martyn Jacques (composer/vocals/accordion) is the founder of The Tiger Lillies and spent much of his early years living above a brothel in London's Soho.
Martyn and the Tiger Lillies have performed in Shockheaded Peter since its conception and, despite winning an Olivier Award for his role, they had to take some time off from the show this spring to pursue other Tiger Lillies projects for which Martyn has written the music.
These include The Tiger Lilles Variete, Circa with the Holy Body Tattoo (the Tiger Lillies perform in both), and a new theatrical production of the Golem which will premiere in Basel in May 2002.

 Tiger Lillies :: news
MARTYN Jacques, frontman of British cabaret trio The Tiger Lillies, spends his time in two different worlds.
Together with drummer Adrian Huge and double bassist Adrian Stout, Jacques uses The Tiger Lillies as a way to show people the side of life they don't normally see, but one that is still equally real.
I'm just singing about things the way they are.' Even Jacques' own band members were initially uncomfortable with his songs when the group first got together over 15 years ago.

 City Pages: Torture for Tots
Jacques and his band, the Tiger Lillies, almost never leave the stage; if they are gone for a moment, a cast member will reach down into a trap door on the floor and drag Jacques back onstage by his ponytail to play another number.
These were the words and the sorts of lyrics that I would sing." Indeed, the pairing of Jacques and Hoffmann seems somehow inevitable; the Tiger Lillies first U.S. release, The Brothel to the Cemetery, contains morbidly funny odes to the crucified Jesus ("Banging in the Nails") and the ravages of age ("Decline").
Jacques wrote all of the songs for the play, adapting them from Dr. Heinrich Hoffmann's notorious 1844 children's book Struwwelpeter.

This disc obviously divides listeners into two camps: those that love the Tiger Lillies and those that love the Tiger Lillies but wish they had more than one singer, or that the singer Martyn Jaques used a greater vocal range.
Martyn Jaques certainly knows how to bring the melodramatic words alive and make the humorous words, deadly!

Wicked Tales Of Naughty Kids / Tiger Lillies' macabre `Peter' comes to ACT
Subtitled ``A Junk Opera,'' it showcases the uniquely twisted British band the Tiger Lillies, led by the accordion-pumping castrato-style singer Martyn Jacques.
Huge, who played in a calypso-style comedy band before joining the Tiger Lillies, says he always knew that conventionally ``pretty'' music was not for him, either: ``I shared a flat with a guy who had 50 Miles Davis albums.
Jacques makes no bones about his distaste for mainstream music and entertainment.

 The Tiger Lillies
Imagine my surprise when the support act, The Tiger Lillies took the stage and I discovered that the voice belonged to a guy 'Martyn Jaques', the group's lead singer and accordion player.
The Recital Studio at the Esplanade lacked the informal atmosphere of the London pubs, where I had seen the Tiger Lillies perform before, but in compensation it boasted great acoustics and a beautifully toned grand piano, which Martyn took full advantage of (musically not sexually).
Martyn's voice and gentle manner did not match his appearance.

Guardian Unlimited Arts features Gorey by name ...
No one in the Tiger Lillies is sure how it happened, but towards the end of 1999 Gorey discovered them, too ("I assume someone saw us performing in New York - he probably had some weird little friends there - and told him about the music," says Jacques).
He wrote about death, unmentionable vices and people who went mad and vanished without trace - everything the Tiger Lillies' lyricist Martyn Jacques had been putting into song for the past decade.
Jacques spent a few months learning the songs so he could perform them to Gorey in person.

 theatreguidelondon- shockheaded peter - 2001/2
Composer-countertenor Martyn Jacques and the Tiger Lillies gloat over the horrible fates of Phil, who was always fidgety at table, of Johnny, who never looked where he was going, and the rest.
That's a loss, since Tiger Lillies singer Martyn Jacques added a note (literally) of the bizarre with his countertenor that Thomas's elephantine figure only vaguely replaces, and since the original band played with more assurance and polish than the newcomers have yet developed.
Several of these interspersed tales, notably the ones about the hunter who lost his rifle (and the hare who found it) and the boy who wouldn't stop sucking his thumb, are accompanied by skilful and inventive puppeteering by the rest of the cast..

Tiger Lillies' odious adventures; Café du Nord goes up for sale; Kitchen Sink joins the mag world
With songs that delve face-first into the odious and putrid sides of human nature, the band has built up a loyal Bay Area following since they first played the Hotel Utah to a handful of people a few years back.

For Martyn Jacques, angel-voiced frontman of London's devilishly debauched trio the Tiger Lillies, it came in the shape of an accordion.
The two Adrians had worked together in assorted blues, rock and jazz ensembles before donning lederhosen to join forces with Jacques, whose pre–Lillies years were fraught with misadventure: The singer tells lurid if far-fetched tales of backstreet drug dealings, and of getting brutally stomped by skinheads in seedy London dives.
Jacques had collaborated transatlantically with Gorey, the American master of the macabre, but in a plot twist worthy of the morbidly ironic tales beloved by both, in April 2000—just days before the composer was to arrive in America to perform the songs in person for the author—Gorey dropped dead of an apparent heart attack.
