 MedFriendly.com: Thorax
In humans, the thorax is another name for chest, the cage of bones and cartilage (a type of tissue) that extends from the bottom of the neck to a muscle known as the diaphragm, which separates it from the belly.
The front of thorax is made up of 12 ribs, the sternum (the flat bone in the middle of the chest), and cartilage that connects the ends of ribs with the sternum.
The thorax protects important parts of the body, such as those that assist in breathing and pumping blood throughout the body.

 thorax
The thorax of spiders and crustaceans, such as lobsters, is fused with the head, to form the cephalothorax.
The volume of the thorax is altered by the contraction of muscles in the diaphragm and the contraction of muscles between the ribs – the intercostal muscles.
During breathing (ventilation) the volume inside the thorax is changed.

Encyclopedia of Nursing and Allied Health: Thorax, bones of
The skeleton of the thorax or chest is a cage that encloses and protects the main organs of respiration and circulation.
Injuries to the bony structures of the thorax are very serious because of the relationship of the thorax to the spine as a whole and because of the importance of the major respiratory and circulatory organs that the thoracic cavity contains.
The sternum is a narrow, elongated, flattened bone that forms the center of the front of the chest.

The Thorax is an important book for all practitioners who wish to broaden their skills in visceral manipulation.
Detailed descriptions and illustrations are provided of tests for dysfunction and treatment of the nonaxial joints, fasciae and viscera of this important area of the body.
While Jean-Pierre Barral's previous books, Visceral Manipulation and Visceral Manipulation II, focus on the abdomen, in The Thorax the author turns his unique gaze to the thoracic cage and its contents.

Objective: To investigate the methods and clinical significance of elevation of concave thorax in posterior correction of scoliosis.
Conclusion: Compared to the traditional convex thoracoplasty, the osteotomy of concave ribs increased the flexibility of the rigid spine, and was helpful to the posterior correction of the lateral curve.
This technique was safe, most of the patients did not need to receive another convex osteotomy.

Age-related changes in elasticity of lung and thorax
The newborn has a very flaccid thorax: small changes in pressure applied to the thorax result in considerable changes in its volume.
During the process of aging the thorax therefore gradually moves towards a more inspiratory position: the lateral and postero-anterior diameters increase.
Such peatients can be recognized by the pronounced inspiratory position of their thorax (hyperinflation).

Conclusion: Approximately 10% of the casualties of a great earthquake may be expected to have thorax and lung injuries, and traumatic chest diseases should be considered in planning the medical response strategies.
The types of injuries that accompanied the thorax and lung injuries were as follows: extremity injury (bone fracture), eight patients; head trauma with subarachnoid hemorrhage, four patients; abdominal trauma, one patient; vertebral injury, one patient; and pelvis injury, one patient.
Seventy-eight records for these 95 patients (82.11%) were available, and 6 patients (7.6%) were found to have thorax and lung injuries.

Adding a small Thermarest or similar pad would be a quick fix, but Thorax integrating some sort of shock cord into the seatbase (like Greenspeed) or some sort of open cell pad (like Trice) would be an even better solution.

 Radiology of the Rabbit Thorax
Following is an excerpt from Dr. Sam Silverman's radiology lecture at the HRS Veterinary Conference last March, discussing radiographic interpretation of some common clinical views of the rabbit thorax.
The only thing you can do on these animals is to go to a grid technique, even if they're not thick enough, and that will clear up some of the scatter.
You do not see large caudal lung fields; the scapulas are superimposed on the dorsal thorax, so if you were to read this out as a dog or a cat, you would come out with a much different diagnosis than you would as a rabbit.

This database will give us a better idea of the range of thorax shapes, sizes and AC in our patient population and also provide us with a realistic set of models to evaluate the efficacy of the different filtering methods.
This research was motivated by a desire to answer questions relating to the problem of reducing the time we need to perform the transmission scan.
