 [No title]
The MHC tetramer assay (Altman et al., 1996) (and a related method using MHC-Ig chimeras (Greten et al., 1998; Hamad et al., 1998)) was developed in response to this need.
In the remainder of this review, we will focus on features of MHC tetramer analysis and results that are most relevant to the study of immune responses to HIV, and to the development of an HIV vaccine.
This points to one of the limitations of the tetramer technique-tetramer staining provides precise measurements of a very specific response, while revealing nothing about responses that are specific for additional epitopes in the same virus.

 Tetramers an emerging tool for immunology research
Tetramer technology applies basic principles of immunology to measure the body's response to a foreign invader.
For a vaccine to work, these killer T-cells must be present at sufficient levels, and a tetramer assay tells immunologists if this has been achieved.
In contrast, because the tetramer assay is so quick and robust, it can be applied to samples from large numbers of patients, and some of the data acquisition can be automated."

 Member Spotlight - Gerry Nepom, Director of the ITN Tetramer Core Facility
The ITN Tetramer Core has the potential to measure the efficacy of investigational therapy within weeks rather than months or even years.
While many new diagnostic tools are expensive and initially unavailable to the average patient, tetramers cost about $12 per patient, so developing tetramer technology for clinical applications could turn out to be a healthcare bargain.
Tetramer names like 0401GAD and 0415GAD hardly convey their importance in understanding the immune response.

 Emory Vaccine Center :: Tetramer
Under contract by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the Tetramer Core develops tetramer reagents that are not available from commercial sources.
The cores are funded through various sources, and hence function somewhat differently, but all are vital to the vaccine research process at Emory and at other institutions throughout the U.S. and the world.
The Emory Vaccine Center has five scientific cores, each specializing in a particular research function such as laboratory assays or vaccine trials management.
