FDA APPROVES TERIPARATIDE TO TREAT OSTEOPOROSIS
To help ensure that patients are aware of important information about teriparatide, the Medication Guide will be distributed by the pharmacist each time the drug is dispensed.
Persons with hypercalcemia, women who are pregnant or nursing, or persons who have ever been diagnosed with bone cancer or other cancers that have spread to the bones, should not use teriparatide.
This safety issue is highlighted in a black box warning in the drug's label for health professionals and explained in a brochure, called a Medication Guide, for patients.

Teriparatide (Forteo), which consists of the biologically active region of human parathyroid hormone, stimulates the activity of osteoblasts, the specialized cells that form new bone.
Nonhormonal drugs for the treatment of osteoporosis include alendronate (Fosamax) and risedronate (Actonel), bisphosphonates that decrease bone resorption, and raloxifene (Evista), a selective estrogen receptor modulator that can increase bone mineral density.
Dietary and supplemental calcium and vitamin D are usually recommended for people at risk; in addition to alcohol and tobacco, a diet high in protein and sodium speed calcium loss.
