SKELETON - LoveToKnow Article on SKELETON
The axial skeleton, from a strictly scientific point of view, should comprise a good deal of the skull as well as the spinal column, ribs and breast bone, but, as the skull (q.v.) is dealt with in a separate article, the three latter structures alone are dealt with here.
EmbryologyThe development of the appendicular skeleton takes place in the core of mesenchyme in the centre of each limb.i This substance first becomes changed into cartilage, except perhaps in the case of the clavicle, though there is at present some doubt as to how much of this hone is chondrified before ossification reaches it.
The sternum or breast bone is an elongated bone which inclines downward and forward in the front wall of the chest.

 Skeleton, The
Skel'eton, THE, or framework of the human body, is composed of 200 bones, of which 74 belong to the axial skeleton--head, neck and trunk--and 126 to the appendicular skeleton--the extremities.
The sternum, or breast bone, occupies the front of the chest, articulates at its upper extremity with the two clavicles, or collar bones, and gives direct articulation to the seven upper ribs on each side.
The fibula is a slender bone, located on the outside of the leg, covered entirely by muscles, except at its upper and lower extremities, and articulating above and below with the tibia.

 The Anatomy of Birds
These are also called the femur, tibia and tarsus respectively in an external view of a bird's anatomy.
The rigidity has been achieved by fusing groups of vertebrae, fusing the two collar bones to make what we call the 'wishbone' and by the addition of special lateral (sideways) growths on the ribs which rest against the next rib back and thus strengthening the whole ribcage.
The second problem is overcome by adding rigidity to the skeleton.

Eyes without a crease are described in the medical literature as having a "single eyelid," whereas those with two segments of the lids between the eyebrow and the eyelashes have "double eyelids" as typical of most Caucasians.
Reformation of the existing crease or creation of a new one (constructing a double eyelid) serves to lift the skin and muscle away from the lid margin and, to a minor degree, lifts the upper lid.
Carey prefers to create a central lid crease at its natural position at the top of the eyelid tarsus (or eyelid skeleton).
