Stress (medicine) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stress (roughly the opposite of relaxation) is a medical term for a wide range of strong external stimuli, both physiological and psychological, which can cause a physiological response called the general adaptation syndrome, first described in 1936 by Hans Selye in the journal Nature.
For example, when Selye reviewed the physiological changes measured in practitioners of transcendental meditation, he concluded that they were the opposites of the body's reaction to stress, and that the therapeutic effect was clearest in conditions caused by a wrong way to adapt and react to stress in daily life.
Stress can directly and indirectly contribute to general or specific disorders of body and mind.

 MSN Encarta - Stress (psychology)
However, most psychologists regard stress as a process involving a person’s interpretation and response to a threatening event.
This response includes physiological changes—such as increased heart rate and muscle tension—as well as emotional and behavioral changes.
Stress can have both positive and negative effects.

Stress also appears to influence the development of cancer, but the relationship is not as well established as it is for cardiovascular diseases.
The field of psychoneuroimmunology focuses on the relationship between psychological influences (such as stress), the nervous system, and the immune system.
There is a moderate positive correlation between extent of exposure to life stressors and cancer—the more stressors, the greater the likelihood of cancer.

 Stress Management
Stress is the "wear and tear" our bodies experience as we adjust to our continually changing environment; it has physical and emotional effects on us and can create positive or negative feelings.
Our goal is not to eliminate stress but to learn how to manage it and how to use it to help us.
And even when we agree that a particular event is distressing, we are likely to differ in our physiological and psychological responses to it.

 Psychology Today: Stress and Eating
The stresses we face today are not like the eat-or-be-eaten stresses we faced when our bodies evolved.
Relaxation techniques may work even earlier in the process, by reducing the psychological perception of stress in the first place.
The difference between atypical and typical depression may lie in the degree to which chronic stress sets off the defensive alerting system versus the appetitive system.

Stress -- The Psychology of Stress Management
The practice of good clinical psychology involves something—call it comfort—which does not mean sympathy or soothing, and it certainly doesn’t mean to have your pain “taken away.” It really means to be urged on to take up the cup of your destiny, with courage and honesty.
Psychology is a complex subject, and many issues are interrelated.
In fact, because of Selye’s influence, psychology and medicine have tended to regard “stress” as if it were some “thing” that could destroy our health and happiness even against our wills.

I learnt that stress is magnified by emotional blockages in the body's energy system and that these 'emotional energy blocks' could simply be released.
