Streptomycin is an antibiotic used in combination with other drugs to treat tuberculosis (TB).
This information is specific to the use of this medication for HIV-related conditions.
However, in persons with weakened immune systems, especially those infected with the HIV virus, TB may overcome the bodyís defenses, multiply and cause active disease.

Streptomycin turned out to be a milestone in the history of drugs to treat tuberculosis and other infections.
Wainwright concluded that "Streptomycin was in fact discovered by one of Waksman's research students, Albert Schatz" (Wainwright, 1989).
Waksman was therefore not directly involved in any way with the early stages of my streptomycin research, which I did independently of him in a basement laboratory.

 H. Corwin Hinshaw Papers, American Philosophical Society
Streptomycin continues to be used, in combination with other newer drugs, to treat tuberculosis, but there is still an on-going battle as the disease continues to develop drug-resistant strains.
Hinshaw had an acute awareness of the historical significance of this particular aspect of his work, as is evidenced by the materials he chose to preserve and the many explanatory notes he left which interpret and underscore the significance of the materials.
Following the heady days of early streptomycin research, Hinshaw moved his family to California, where he worked in internal medicine as a pulmonary specialist and served as Clinical Professor of Medicine, Head of the Division of Chest Diseases at Stanford Medical School from 1949-1959.

Streptomycin is not altogether a harmless remedy, but with greater experience with this antibiotic, methods have been devised to minimize this effect.
During the streptothricin studies Dr. Waksman and his collaborators developed a series of test-methods, which turned out to be very useful in the isolation of streptomycin in 1943.
Encouraged by the discovery of streptothricin and stimulated by the triumphal development of penicillin treatment, the research team headed by Dr.Waksman continued their untiring search for new antibiotic-producing microbes.

STREPTOMYCIN TREATMENT OF PULMONARY TUBERCULOSIS (Reprinted from BMJ 1948:ii769-782) -- 317 (7167): 1248 -- BMJ
When a special committee of the Medical Research Council undertook in September, 1946, to plan clinical trials of streptomycin in tuberculosis the main problem faced was that of investigating the effect of the drug in pulmonary tuberculosis.
Of the remaining 107 patients 55 had been allocated to the streptomycin group and 52 to the control group.
On the other hand, as in the S group, nearly all patients who deteriorated in the first two months continued to deteriorate subsequently-i.e., for those who showed no response to the first two months of bed-rest and streptomycin, or bed-rest alone, the outlook was poor.

 The Aftermath of Penicillin
Although Actinomycetes are no longer classified as fungi, the detailed story of streptomycin, one of the most important antibiotics isolated from Actinomycetes, is a very interesting one that parallels the research that was done with penicillin, but with a far different outcome for the two people involved in the discovery of streptomycin.
As in the case of the discovery of penicillin, the story can be rather complex and who should be credited for the discovery is one that is argued, even today, and for those of you who are interested in going to graduate school after your undergraduate degree, may find this story relevant to your career.
Albert Schatz was the person who actually isolated streptomycin from Streptomyces griseus, determined its antibiotic properties and it was his work that led to it being produced in large enough quantities that would enable medical researchers to properly evaluate streptomycin.
