Topic: Stimuli

 Subliminal Perception Manual
Similarly, Neely (1977) found that expectations have considerable influence on stimuli that are perceived consciously, but not those perceived unconsciously.
Cognitive and social psychologists are now learning that stimuli presented subliminally can not only be perceived, but can have a considerable influence over a variety of cognitive processes (possibly even behavior).
These expectancies were not present when the stimuli were not consciously perceived, producing considerably different behavior between the two groups.

 Self Programmed Control Center
A suggestion is a stimulus or set of stimuli, usually verbal in nature, by which one    individual (1) evokes a cognitive stimulus in another, and (2) at the same time evokes an inhibitory set which tends to inhibit stimuli (sensory or cognitive) incompatible with the cognitive stimulus evoked.
Such competing stimuli would include the "negative" thought likely to occur to the subject that he will only be able to see as well as he has in the past.
The inhibitory set produced by the HI suppresses competing stimuli, thereby increasing the probability that this cognitive stimulus will rise to a dominant position in the hierarchy and thus increasing the probability that the response will be made.

Classification and discrimination of single, complex, and interpolated speechlike stimuli
Discrimination of the interpolated speech-based stimuli may be based on a long-term phoneme memory mechanism, as the natural quality of the sound is probably important for categorical perception (see also Schouten and Van Hessen, 1992).
Transition direction is probably not a very important perceptual cue because the subjects' responses for the /a/-like as well as for the /u/-like stimuli change abruptly between the 4th and 5th stimuli, whereas only the /a/-like stimuli, not the /u/-like ones, change direction at that point.
As for the second point: if our formant stimuli are not natural enough to be retrieved from long-term memory, they could be retrieved from a temporary context coding memory that is created through training and feedback.

 [No title]
Programming common stimuli means including stimuli (i.e., people, things, procedures) in the instructional setting that are: ___________________________ in the generality environment(s) and that might ____________________________for the target behavior.
Students are less likely to be emit learned behaviors under conditions that differ significantly from those that were present when they learned those behaviors than they are when condition are similar to the training conditions.
Even though efforts have been made to include stimuli in the training environment that are common in the nontraining environment(s), some behaviors may show little generality.

Examining the Influence of Audio and Visual Stimuli on a Haptic Display
The visual stimuli was presenting interactive information to the subject in that it reflected their physical movement of the Moose puck, while the auditory stimuli remained the same no matter what the user was doing.
The experiment yields a characterization of the effectiveness of visual and auditory stimuli at reinforcing a haptic percept.
The focus was on using visual and auditory stimuli to enhance the effectiveness of a haptic interface.

Trauma Information Pages, Articles: van der Kolk (1994)
Decreased hippocampal functioning causes behavioral disinhibition, possibly by stimulating incoming stimuli to be interpreted in the direction of "emergency" (fight/flight) responses.
These responses to extreme experiences are so consistent across traumatic stimuli that this biphasic reaction appears to be the normative response to any overwhelming and uncontrollable experience.
However, as Pitman has pointed out (16), in PTSD, the stimuli that precipitate emergency responses may not be conditional enough: many triggers not directly related to the traumatic experience may precipitate extreme reactions.

Journal of Vision - Use of chromaticity and luminance to segregate stimuli in visual search, by Orenbaun & Nagy
In a third condition, variation in the color of the irrelevant stimuli was introduced.
We conclude that chromaticity can be used effectively to segregate a subset of stimuli to be attended, but luminance contrast cannot.
A similar experiment was performed with luminance contrast as the dimension defining relevant (dim) and irrelevant (bright) stimuli.

 Do Fish Feel Pain
Because the experience of pain is separate from the behavioral response to injury, the term nociception is used to refer to detection of injury by the nervous system (which may or may not lead to pain).
The rapid, well-coordinated escape responses of a fish to nociceptive stimuli are generated automatically at brainstem and spinal cord levels but, if a fish’s brainstem and spinal cord work like a humans (and it is very likely that they do) there is no awareness of neural activity occurring at these levels.
For example, the brains of sheep and deer have a tiny fraction of the frontal lobe mass that is present in humans, making it probable that the kinds of psychological experience of these animals, including pain, is quite different from human experience.

 Understanding Subliminal Stimuli
The researchers then examine the patterns of errors in the subject's responses to the visual stimuli that are explainable only by the content of the subliminal stimuli.
The invention, subject of a patent application on behalf of the UW by the Washington Research Foundation in 1995, involves the concept of a "response window." Subjects are constrained to respond rapidly within a fixed, brief interval after a pair of stimuli are presented--one subliminal, one visible.
Such stimuli can nevertheless exert an effect on judgment and behavior.

Event-Related Potentials: The P3OO and Self-Referent Stimuli - Storming Media
Abstract: This was an exploratory study designed to assess the effect of self- referent stimuli on the P300 component of the electroencephalogram (EEG).
The P300 was examined for any effects on its amplitude having to do with the truthfulness of the stimuli.
Results indicate that both true and false self- referent stimuli elicited clearly identifiable P300s.

 Behaviorism [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
The scientific nub of the approach is a concept of operant conditioning indebted to Thorndike's "Law of Effect." Operants (e.g., bar-presses or key-pecks) are units of behavior an organism (e.g., a rat or pigeon) occasionally emits "spontaneously" prior to conditioning.
For Tolman, stimuli play a cognitive role as signals to the organism, leading to the formation of "cognitive maps" and to "latent learning" in the absence of reinforcement.
In this regard their work may be considered precursory to cognitivism, and each touches on important philosophical issues besides.

 The Magical Number Seven
Then the left circle would represent the amount of information in the stimuli, the right circle the amount of information in his responses, and the overlap the stimulus-response correlation as measured by the amount of transmitted information.
The results with this unlimited response technique are shown by the filled circles on the graph.
We must have some understanding of why the one-dimensional variables we judge in the laboratory give results so far out of line with what we do constantly in our behavior outside the laboratory.

Stimuli are events in the environment that influence behavior.
Some stimuli may produce an emotional reaction which may influence the occurrence of behavior.

 Precipitating Stimuli for Reflex Seizures
It should also be emphasized that when reflex seizures occur with focal epilepsy, reportedly normal imaging studies may be misleading; subtle cortical dysplastic lesions may be missed unless special MRI techniques are used or may be found only in a surgical pathology specimen (for an example see Martinez et al., 2000).
The only species, however, in which the reflex seizures and EEG findings are similar to those in humans is the baboon Papio papio extensively studied by Naquet and co-workers, although the light-induced epileptic discharges in baboons occur in the frontorolandic area rather than in the occipital lobe (reviewed by Menini and Silva-Barrat, 1998).
The current proposal (Engel, 2001) upon which this article is based, defines reflex epilepsy syndromes as those “… in which all epileptic seizures are precipitated by sensory stimuli.
