Topic: Stent

 Stent
The experience with drugeluting stents may change the technique of stenting, but one goal that will not change and will become even more important is the reliable delivery of the stent to the lesion.
Radiation therapy to the stent area is also being used to prevent this scarring but there is concern that the radiation may lead to subsequent sarcomas in the coronary artery or myocardium, coronary arterial aneurysms, or early rethrombosis.
The wide acceptance of coronary stenting was based on the results of the BElgian NEtherlands STENT (BENESTENT) (1) and the STent REStenosis Study (STRESS) (2) trials and was facilitated by the elimination of anticoagulant therapy after stent implantation.

 Ureteric Stent
Stents can cause discomfort or pain, commonly in the bladder and kidney (loin) area, but sometimes in other areas such as the groin, urethra and genitals.
If you have a stent with a thread coming outside the body through the urethra, sexual activities may be difficult.
The stents are flexible enough to withstand various body movements.

eMedicine - Laryngeal and Tracheal Stents : Article by John E McClay, MD
The decision to use a laryngeal or tracheal stent and the type of stent used is based on the experience and knowledge of the surgeon or physician.
The stent has been used in primary tracheomalacia or bronchomalacia, external compression of the trachea or bronchi, or collapse of the trachea or bronchi from previous surgery.
The first reason to use stents in cases of LTS is to support the larynx, typically with some form of autologous cartilage, after a reconstructive technique has been performed.

 USATODAY.com - A new stent for angioplasty
Cypher uses the anti-organ-rejection drug Sirolimus; Taxus uses the anti-cancer drug Paclitaxel.
What doctors can't say is whether angioplasty and a drug-coated stent work as effectively and lasts as long as bypass surgery.
Cardiologists say that only about 5% of patients who get drug-coated stent need repeat procedures, about the same as the one-year failure rate for bypass surgery.

 Coronary Stent Implantation
A small incision is made in the skin, and a needle is used to puncture the artery.
If a clot does form on the stent despite all efforts to prevent it, doctors may treat the problem with a repeat angioplasty.
This is a good time to ask questions and, most importantly, to share any feelings or concerns you may have about angioplasty and stents.

 Drug Eluting Stent -- Angioplasty.org
The concept of the stent grew directly out of interventional cardiologists' experience with angioplasty balloons in the first decade of use (1977-87).
Upon further study, it seemed that the incidence of thrombosis was no greater than that with bare metal stents.
For a discussion of the impact of drug-eluting stents on patient care, read our exclusive interview with leading interventional cardiologist Gregg W. Stone, MD, of Lenox Hill Hospital in New York.

CYPHER(R) Sirolimus-eluting Coronary Stent Benefits From Clinical Success, Worldwide Growth in 2005
This study was one of many clinical successes in 2005 for the CYPHER(R) Stent.
Finally, a cost-effectiveness analysis of the ARTS I and II trials demonstrated that treatment with the CYPHER(R) Stent offers potential cost-savings over bypass surgery, a finding that supports the use of drug-eluting stents in treating certain complex patient cases that would have otherwise been directed to surgery.
It is supported by a robust clinical trial program that includes more than 40 studies, inclusive of independent clinical trials, that examine the performance of the stent in vessels of varying complexity.

Angioplasty with stent placement for heart attack and unstable angina
When a stent is used, you are given aspirin and usually another antiplatelet medicine, such as ticlopidine (Ticlid) or clopidogrel (Plavix).
Angioplasty/stenting is less invasive and has a shorter recovery time than bypass surgery, which requires open-heart surgery.
Angioplasty does not require open-chest surgery and has less risk for immediate complications.

Stent - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
One of the weak points of vascular stents, however, is the development of a thick smooth muscle tissue inside the lumen, the so-called neointima.
The word 'stent' has erroneously been linked to the English dentist Charles Iversen Stent (1845–1901), who was however responsible for a number of other innovations in medical treatment.
This makes stents suitable for patients with advanced disease or those for whom otherwise the risk of major surgery is high.

 CYPHER® Sirolimus-eluting Coronary Stent
Clinical evidence and experience with more than 50,000 patients treated to date in nearly 60 countries, suggests that the CYPHER® Stent represents the beginning of a new era in interventional cardiology -- an era in which the combination of drugs and devices substantially improves patient outcomes.
The stent's treatment process, or mechanism of action, is controlled by a polymer coating that gradually releases the drug sirolimus into the vessel lining to prevent scar tissue growth, a frequent reaction that leads to reblockage following current treatment procedures.
The outstanding results were achieved in a broad range of patients, including those with complex lesions and at high risk for reblockage.
