Topic: Small saphenous vein

 Surgical treatment of varicose veins
It should be noted that stripping the short saphenous vein is associated with a high incidence of sural nerve injury.
The recently developed technique of subfascial endoscopic perforator surgery (SEPS) has allowed perforating veins to be divided effectively with minimal morbidity through a small incision.
Closure of the long saphenous vein with endoluminal radio-frequency thermal heating of the vein wall in combination with phlebectomy, has been shown to be feasible, safe and effective at limited follow-up.

Each lower limb has three anatomically and functionally distinguishable sets of veins viz
The small saphenous vein is formed on the dorsum of the foot by the union of lateral end of the dorsal venous arch with the lateral marginal vein.
The constant position of the great saphenous vein in front of the medial malleolus should be remembered for patients requiring emergency blood transfusion.
This condition commonly occurs in the superficial veins of the lower limb, and although not a fatal disease, it is responsible for considerable discomfort, pain and suffering in innumerable persons.

SMALL SAPHENOUS VEIN: (sometimes called SSV, Lesser Saphenous Vein, or LSV) A superficial vein that starts at the outside of the foot and travels up the back of the calf where it empties into the deep vein (popliteal vein) in the crease of the knee.
SPIDER VEIN: A tiny varicose vein that may be blue or red color that does not protrude above the skin surface and frequently looks like a spider.
INCOMPETENT VEIN: Blood flows in the wrong direction.

 EndoVenous Laser Ablation
Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) is a treatment alternative to surgical stripping of the greater saphenous vein.
A small laser fiber is inserted, usually through a needle stick in the skin, into the damaged vein.
EVLA was originally used to treat Saphenofemoral Junction (SFJ) reflux, a condition in which the Great Saphenous Vein carries blood backward down the leg due to a damaged valve where it attaches to the Femoral Vein in the groin.

The Internal Pudendal Veins (internal pudic veins) are the venæ comitantes of the internal pudendal artery.
Both sets of veins are provided with valves, which are more numerous in the deep than in the superficial set.

Re: What about the vein in coronary by-pass surgery?
The great saphenous vein runs from the foot, up the medial aspect of the leg to join the femoral vein in the groin whereas the small saphenous vein runs up the back of the calf to communicate with the deep venous system at the back of the knee.
Both the great and small saphenous veins are of the superficial one.
Previously, people tend to use segments of healthy autologous saphenous vein (a superficial vein in the leg) for bypass, but nowadays people tend to use the internal mammary artery or one of the epigastric arteries for this operation.

Saphenous vein definition - Medical Dictionary definitions of popular medical terms
Saphenous vein: The saphenous veins -- there are two, the great and the small saphenous veins - serve as the principal veins running superficially (near the surface) up the leg.
The small saphenous vein runs behind the outer malleolus (the protuberance on the outside of the ankle joint), comes up the back of the leg and joins the popliteal vein in the space behind the knee (the popliteal space).

Wrong, the answer is D. Other tributaries of the upper part of the great saphenous vein include the external pudendal veins out of which one is joined by the superficial dorsal vein of the penis and the deep external pudendal veins which join the great saphenous vein at its termination in the saphenous opening.

The Superficial Subinguinal Glands (lymphoglandulæ subinguinales superficiales) are placed on either side of the upper part of the great saphenous vein; their efferents consist chiefly of the superficial lymphatic vessels of the lower extremity; but they also receive some of the vessels which drain the integument of the penis, scrotum, perineum, and buttock.
They may be divided into two groups by a horizontal line at the level of the termination of the great saphenous vein; those lying above this line are termed the superficial inguinal glands, and those below it the subinguinal glands, the latter group consisting of a superficial and a deep set.

New Treatments for Leg Veins Stand the Test of Time
In the past, the only option for dermatologists when treating patients with varicose veins -- particularly for those whose condition involved the main vein trunk in the legs known as the Great Saphenous Vein (GSV) -- was surgery with stripping of the defective vein.
Spider veins, on the other hand, are dilated small blood vessels located close to the surface of the skin that have a red or bluish color.
Varicose veins occur from the backward flow of blood in the legs caused by damaged or diseased valves in the veins.
