Gender of rearing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is the gender assigned to the child by parents and doctors (usually based on the appearance of the external genitalia), and taught to the child.
Transgender refers to the development of a gender identity which is discordant with gender of rearing and often also genital anatomy.
Gender of rearing includes both conscious and unconscious expectations and treatment of the child.

Sex - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Discordances between the biological and psychosocial levels, such as when the gender identity does not match the anatomic sex, or between the various psychosocial levels, such as when the gender role does not match the gender identity, are even more common but less well understood.
It shows the man with broader shoulders (sex dimorphism) and the woman in clothing that is in the western world rarely worn by men, a dress (which functions as a gender signal).
In contrast to the small percentage of people with biological discordances of sex, a fairly large proportion of human beings may be "discordant" in one or more behavioral or psychological dimensions.

Rearing with Males Accelerates Onset of Sexual Maturity in Female Domestic Fowl
In the second experiment, the effect of rearing environment on the expression of sexual crouching in response to humans was also investigated.
Although most of the early work concentrated on the effects of social experience on sexual behavior of males, there are a few anecdotal reports of the effects of rearing environment on the sexual responses of female poultry toward humans.
However, their behavioral responses were more similar to those of separate-sex females reared in the complete absence of males.

Most studies of the subject have focused on social sex because the change of legal gender is an unequivocal event, but the net consequence may be to underestimate the real frequency of disorders of gender identity because some individuals with discordant gender identity may not change gender role behavior for personal reasons.
Since sex assignment and the sex of rearing are determined by anatomical development, any direct hormonal effects on behavior in most individuals with abnormal sexual development would not be apparent because they would correspond to anatomical development and hence to gender assignment and sex of rearing.
Sexually dimorphic behaviors of a variety of types are regulated by gonadal steroids, including the songs and mating behaviors of birds, copulatory patterns in mammals, and complex forms of ritual behavior such as musth in elephants and male dominance in mice.

The Society for Endocrinology - Training
The correct sex of rearing should provide the affected newborn with a content childhood, a clear sexual identity and the opportunity to enjoy a sexual relationship in adulthood and these concepts should be discussed openly with the parents and the growing child.
The decision about the sex of rearing is not easy and should be reached in the light of the investigations performed above and following thorough discussion with other health professionals as well as parents.
Parents may require support on their handling of the situation with close relatives and friends and enlisting the help of a trained counselor would be advisable.

 GID.info Gender Identity Disorder Information
The report claimed that 20% of those raised as girls were satisfied with their surgically constructed vaginas, while 50% of those raised as men were satisfied with their male genitals after testosterone hormone therapy.
Intersexuality (abbreviated IS) is a broad class of medical conditions that features "congenital anomalies of the reproductive and sexual system." A person with an intersex condition is born with sex chromosomes, external genitalia, or an internal reproductive system that is not considered "normal" for either a male or female.
Victorian doctors believed that the gonads were the seat of "true sex," and thus created a system of nomenclature -- in the absence of any knowledge of genetics, endocrinology, or embryology -- which categorized people as "male pseudohermaphrodite," "female pseudohermaphrodite," or "true hermaphrodite." It's time to eliminate this quaint Victorianism from modern medical practice.

An Emerging Ethical and Medical Dilemma: Should Physicians Perform Sex Assignment on Infants with Ambiguous Genitalia?
It was thus that the theory that an infant’s sex could be successfully reassigned had a profound influence on the standard of care for infants born with ambiguous genitalia, a micropenis or those losing their penis by trauma or accidental amputation.
How surgical treatment including sex reassignment surgery for intersex infants became a routine recommendation of practitioners and how parents were persuaded to consent to such radical surgeries on their infants provides a cautionary tale that is relevant both for medicine and law.
Parents were counseled to raise these children without equivocation as to the child’s assigned sex and to withhold information from the child so that the child would feel secure in his or her gender.

Ambiguous genitalia babies - Enlargement advice
Results of the second study, which examined intersex patients' knowledge of their condition, suggest that patients are not receiving the close counseling with medical professionals which the first paper finds important.
The majority of men (76 percent) and women (78 percent) were satisfied with their assigned sex of rearing.
Most subjects were satisfied with their body image, sexual functioning with a partner and sexual orientation, and considered themselves appropriately masculine or feminine.

We also must understand that the process of ‘assignment and rearing’ of a child is at the mercy of parents’ and teachers’ own personal views of masculinity and femininity.
They conclude that ‘gender of assignment and rearing’ is the greatest predictor of gender identity and ‘over-rides’ physiological prescriptions of gender.
Money has suggested that for most individuals, who have been reassigned to another sex after birth that if they change before the age of 18 months there will be little or no chance of psychological disturbance, providing parents and relatives firmly accept the new gender assignment.

Neither sex nor early diet of the animals were much of a factor in the investigative behavior observed.
In one paradigm, the 90-day-old EC rats were found to be significantly more responsive than SC rats to each change in the spatial relationships of objects contained in an open field.
The choline-treated EC males were the most influenced by their experience seeing a demonstrator swim to a platform location.

 NGC - NGC Summary
Because words spoken in the delivery room may have a lasting impact on parents and their relationship with their infant, it is important that no attempt be made to suggest a diagnosis or offer a gender assignment.
Historically, it has been assumed that the psychosexual development of infants with an intersex disorder is largely the result of rearing rather than intrinsic.
For example, an infant with what appears to be bilateral cryptorchidism might be assumed to be a boy because of a normal-appearing phallic structure but in fact may be a girl with severe virilizing congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH).

One article for the XVth World Congress of Sexology-Paris2001
If the social environment and the sex of rearing is syncronous with the gender identity, and also the genitals naturally or surgically are in harmony, the child is normal, with no problem or dysphoria --- this way lives the great majority of humans.
But for David and other boys reared and reassigned as girls, and for a lot of others prematurely surgically reassigned based in sex of rearing therapy, it was too late --- see the more than 1500 intersex dysphorics of Intersex Society of North America (Fausto-Sterling 2000, Nussbaum 2000).
If the social pressure is syncronous or lightly assincronous with the neuro-psychical gender identity--- lived by the child as a deep feeling to be a boy or a girl--- the identity naturally stabilizes in a steady state.

ANNE FAUSTO-STERLING: This established sex difference in the brain is an anatomical difference, and quite frankly no one knows what it means in terms of behavior.
WILLIAM REINER: It allowed me, as a surgeon, to be able to deal with parents of a child who was a genetic male but had no penis, and feel comfortable in saying, "We have a surgical solution, because we have a psychological solution, and that surgical solution is going to coincide with the psychological solution.
Then one of Gorski's students claimed to have found something, a tiny area of the brain that seemed to be different in males and females.

 No Time for Sex
During these times, she says, "be positive and dedicated to your partner, just in conversation." It doesn't have to include sex, though these 10-minute appreciation breaks may lead to sex.
Instead, experts suggest, sit down and talk about the gigantic changes in your life and how you can still find time for sex.
To rediscover each other as lovers, rather than parents, spend 10 minutes in bed after waking up and before going to sleep, suggests Kate Wachs, PhD, a Chicago psychologist and relationship expert.

"Ambiguous Sex"—or Ambivalent Medicine? Intersex Society of North America
Many parents, especially those unfamiliar with sex development, are bothered by their children’s intersexed genitals and receptive to offers of “normalizing” medical treatments.
In fact, any close study of sexual anatomy results in a loss of faith that there is a simple, “natural” sex distinction that will not break down in the face of certain anatomical, behavioral, or philosophical challenges.
Thus the late twentieth century medical approach to intersexuality is based essentially on an anatomically strict psychosocial theory of gender identity.

 Hermaphroditism - New Treatments, January 22, 2005
Internal genital structures that are incompatible with the assigned sex.
The timing of surgery needs to be individualized based on medical (i.e., endocrine) considerations, familial acceptance of sex assignment, and technical feasibility.
Although ultimate sex assignment may be based on phenotypic appearance, the gonadal sex helps the clinician rule in or out a clinically urgent situation, such as salt wasting congenital adrenal hyperplasia.

 Fall 2000 Section Newsletter: Review--Lansford
From the time of David's sex reassignment, which occurred at age seven months, initiated by a series of surgeries, until he was 14 years old, he struggled and attempted to reconcile his emotions of not feeling that he was truly a girl.
It is noted in the AAP statement that historically, it has been assumed that the psychosexual development of infants with an intersex disorder is largely the result of rearing rather that intrinsic.
He believed that children are born wholly undifferentiated in terms of their psychological sex and they form a conception of themselves as masculine or feminine solely through rearing.

 Hipparchia [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
His Republic advocates the equality of the sexes, co-ed public exercise and training, and a version of “free love” wherein those wishing to have sex will simply satisfy their desires wherever they happen to be at the moment, even in public.
Stoic ethics were generally influenced by Cynic values, such as self-sufficiency, the importance of practice in achieving virtue, and the rejection of the conventional values attached to pleasure and pain.
As exemplars of anaideia, Hipparchia and Crates influenced their pupil Zeno of Citium, the founder of Stoicism.

 Sex of rearing
Aspects of rearing include choosing a name, sex-congruent clothes and toys for the child's culture, and both conscious and unconscious expectations and treatment of the child.
This is the sex "taught" by the parents to the child.
Much evidence suggests that sex of rearing is one of, if not the major determinant of gender identity, though when biological levels of sexual differentiation are discordant, this is less certain.

 Feminist Ethics
By stressing women's ultimate responsibility for bringing (or not bringing) new persons into existence, Held does not wish to negate her previous point that fathers as well as mothers are obligated to rear children.
Neither men nor women will be able to authentically care.
The fact that women can bear children as well as rear children may signal that women are, afterall, more responsible than men for the existence of new persons.

In contrast, increasing the number of parental females did not lead to fewer female offspring as expected under local mate competition.

RT-PCR showed that P450arom mRNA was highly expressed in the ovary and spleen but weakly in the testis and brain.
The phenotypic sex of many teleost fishes including flounders can be experimentally altered by treating embryos or larvae with varied temperatures or sex-steroid hormones.

The results further indicate that due to the non-homogenous reactions on sex determination, the lability of sex ratio to elevated temperatures might depend on specific breeding pairs and therefore it might be a heritable trait.
The overall male ratio in the treatment group was [79.1]% while for the control the male ratio was [54.1]%.

Baker v. Vermont: Information From Answers.com
The state, along with two of the towns, moved to dimiss the lawsuit on the grounds that no relief could be legally be granted for the plaintiffs' grievances.
Next, the court acknowledged the reality that not every law could be made perfect, and that various practicalities needed to be taken into account.
The court examined and rejected the State's argument that same-sex marriages would do harm by weakening the link between marriage and child rearing, based largely on the arguments provided by the plaintiffs.

CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Captivities of the Israelites
Babylonia was pre-eminently a land of agriculture, and the Southern Israelites, who at home, on the whole had been a vine-growing and pastoral people, now by choice, if not by necessity, gave themselves to the tilling of the soil and the rearing of cattle in the rich alluvial flats of Mesopotamia (cf.
It is evident that soon after their deportation many of the Jews in Chaldea were in a positions to build homes and plant gardens (Jer., xxix, 5).
The products of Babylonia, especially grain, formed the staples of its busy internal commerce, and doubtless the great marts at Babylon, Nipper, and elsewhere, attracted many Jews into mercantile pursuits.
