Topic: Sensory deprivation

 PhysicalControlOfTheMind
The literature on sensory deprivation is voluminous (197) and shows conclusively that the cerebral cortex requires a stream of stimulation for the preservation of behavioral and mental normality.
Most sensory messages travel through peripheral nerves, dorsal roots, spinal cord, and medulla to the thalamic nuclei in the brain, but from there we lose their trail and do not know where the information is interpreted as painful or pleasurable, or how affective components are attributed to a sensation (212, 220).
Curiosity derives from expectancy of novel sensory stimulation and motivates exploratory behavior in both animals and man, while boredom has negative reinforcing properties and is related to the absence of novel sensory inputs (16, 95).

 2000 Meeting Report Preprint
While most studies of sensory plasticity examine the effects of sensory loss or deprivation, the study described by Sarah Pallas (Georgia State University, Atlanta, GA) involved an ingenious technique for inducing sensory reorganization in the ferret.
Sensory interaction at a similar latency was reported by Bèatrice De Gelder (Tilberg University, The Netherlands), who observed differences in ERPs to auditory and visual emotional cues beginning at 110 ms.
His data show that, while visual experience is not necessary for visual responsiveness in SC cells, it is critical for the development of multisensory integration.

 SENSUB Project
The main goal of this three-year basic research project is to study cortical and cognitive plasticity when tactile and/or auditory input are provided, in the case of sensory deprivation (visual handicap), by an artificial sensory substitution system.
Applications of psychophysics techniques are designed to unravel the nature of percepts provided by sensory substitution systems, as well as the part played by cognitive processing.
To attain this objective, experimental psychology, neuroimaging and biomedical engineering techniques for sensory processing will be implemented.

It couples a learned sensory stimulus (man in ski mask in alley = danger) to an adaptive response (fight or flight).
The hippocampus is particularly vulnerable to several disease processes, including ischemia, which is any obstruction of blood flow or oxygen deprivation, Alzheimer's disease, and epilepsy.
The olfactory system disobeys a general rule of sensory systems - it does not have to pass through thalamus before reaching cortex.

Sensory deprivation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sensory deprivation is the deliberate reduction or removal of stimuli from one or more of the senses.
Sensory deprivation has been used in various alternative medicines and in psychological experiments (see floatation tank), and for torture or punishment.

 The Psychology of Isolation
Before investigating potential psychological problems associated with spaceflight, it is important to set a foundation by investigating the studies done by the psychological community in the areas of isolation and sensory deprivation.
Brownfield (1965) points out that achieving actual sensory deprivation without "the complicating side effects of drug anesthesia or amputation" is very difficult, although complete deprivation of the senses of sight and sound are achieved relatively easily with the proper experimental conditions and equipment.
Distinctions were soon made between sensory deprivation, which was an actual complete reduction of the sensory information available, and perceptual/sensory isolation, which is a monotonous, static sensory environment (Brownfield, 1965).

 US PRISON TORTURE AND YOU
Solitary confinement is the absolute isolation of a human being or an animal in a cell alone --- solitary confinement has been proven to cause sensory deprivation --- and sensory deprivation causes serious psychological damages, resulting in a variety of mental disorders.
The Department of Correction's own psychiatrists and psychologists; the Clinical Director of Psychiatry at the esteemed Harvard University; and even the United States Federal Courts have acknowledged and ruled that solitary confinement causes sensory deprivation, which in turn causes "substantial psychological damage." This is not a theory ---it is a fact.
This commentary, by Dickens, caused the United States Supreme Court to review the use of solitary confinement, and they concluded that it did indeed cause mental disorders, and was therefore a violation of the Eighth Amendment Right to be free from cruel and unusual punishment.

After my hour ended, I quickly forgot about sensory deprivation tanks for more than a dozen years, until one night lying depressed in my marriage bed with the venetian blind shadows on the apartment ceiling, I realized that I hadn't seen pure darkness since I had paid for it at Tranquility Tanks.

Gale Encyclopedia of Psychology: Sensory deprivation
A form of sensory deprivation known as REST (restricted environmental stimulation), which consists of floating for several hours in a dark, soundproof tank of water heated to body temperature, has been used to treat drug and smoking addictions, lower back pain, and other conditions associated with excessive stress.
Sensory deprivation experiments of the 1950s have shown that human beings need environmental stimulation to function normally.
Thus, appropriate degrees of sensory deprivation may actually have a therapeutic effect when arousal levels are too high.

For the child with sensory deprivation they may feel like the sunlight is blaring in their eyes, the TV is set on HIGH volume, the air conditioner is too loud and blowing in their face.
Although sensory disorders can be present in any child, studies indicate that approximately 70% of children with learning disabilities have sensory issues.
An OT that specializes in sensory integration (only about 20% of OT's) will do a structured examination of the child's responses to various sensory stimulation, checking for balance, fine and gross motor skills, coordination, eye movements.

Many months ago I had commented to a friend that the harmonically rich drones from this album coupled with a removal of non-auditory sensory input (such as when partially submerged in a bathtub) was like an out-of-body experience.

Modern consciousness researchers consider the device an early precursor of the sensory-deprivation tank, made famous by the movie Altered States, in which one floats in total darkness on the surface of salt-saturated water, allowing the exploration of inner states of consciousness through the complete elimination of outer sensory distractions.
My nylon pocket hammock, with me in it, existed for a while as one brief moment in the four-dimensional time-body of the idea behind both the witch's cradle and the sensory deprivation tank.

Modulation of spike timing by sensory deprivation during induction of cortical map plasticity.
This phenomenon, called experience-dependent map plasticity, acts during development to transform immature circuits into appropriately organized connections that mediate adult sensory perception and sensory-guided behavior.
Such spike timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) is robust in S1 in vitro, and we showed recently that whisker deprivation acutely alters the timing of S1 spikes in vivo in a manner appropriate to drive LTD at relevant S1 synapses.
