Sensory Integration Dysfunction - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sensory integration dysfunction generally tends to affect three over-riding systems inside the body: tactile (touch), vestibular (balance-located in the ears), and proprioceptive (awareness of where body parts are located spatially in relation to one another).
Sensory Integration Dysfunction is a neurological disorder pertaining to a person's ability to register and process information from their five commonly known senses (vision, auditory, touch, olfaction, and taste) plus their sense of movement (vestibular) and their positional sense (propioception)[1].
Sensory integration is the ability to take in information through the senses of touch, movement, smell, taste, vision, and hearing, then combining the resulting perceptions with prior information, memories, and knowledge already stored in the brain, and to then derive coherent meaning from processing the stimuli.

 Description of Sensory Integration
Proponents theorize that sensory integration is an innate neurobiological process (Hatch-Rasmussen, 1995), and that children with autism and other developmental delays experience dysfunction in which sensory input is not integrated or organized appropriately by the brain.
Sensory Integration (SI) therapy is a sensory-motor treatment based upon theories developed over the last 30 years by Dr. A.
Ottenbacher concludes in a 1991 textbook on sensory integration that "previous attempts to synthesize and interpret existing sensory integration research reveal that a clear empirical consensus does not exist regarding the validity of sensory integration theory, or the effectiveness of sensory integration practice." Ottenbacher further concludes more research is needed to reach empirical consensus.

Sensory Integration to Schools, Homes and Businesses
Using the sensory integrative approach, the therapist analyzes the child’s processing of vestibular, proprioceptive, and tactile sensations in relation to his or her ability to learn and move, essential components of the child’s daily life.
Using sensory integrative principles, the therapist incorporates meaningful activities that provide specific sensory stimuli to elicit an adaptive response, thereby assisting the child in his or her overall motor and conceptual learning (Fisher and Murray, 1991).
Once a child with sensory processing difficulties has been identified, the occupational therapist is responsible for devising an effective treatment plan (Koomar and Bundy, 1991).

They propose that sensory defensiveness is on a continuum of approach and avoidance behaviors.
Ayres defined sensory integration as, "the neurological process that organizes sensation from one’s own body and from the environment and makes it possible to use the body effectively within the environment.
Due to the increasing interest in sensory modulation, it is increasingly important for OT practitioners, researchers, and educators to have a common way to discuss and disseminate information relevant to the area.

Sensory integration dysfunction or sensory integrative dysfunction is a problem with processing information received through the senses.
Sensory Integration (SI) is a theory and type of treatment used primarily by occupational therapists (OTR).
Sensory integration, simply put, is the ability to take in information through senses (touch, movement, smell, taste, vision, and hearing), to put it together with prior information, memories, and knowledge stored in the brain, and to make a meaningful response.

 Sensory Integration FAQ
Therapy for sensory integration dysfunction is usually done by an occupational therapist or physical therapist who provides sensory and motor activities, often in the form of play, to help the child better absorb and process sensory information.
The goal of sensory integration therapy is to help the individual organize or modulate the sensory information in order to have a more organized response to sensory stimuli.
