Patent 4880017: Method of marking the sclera and/or limbus in intraocular surgery
The sclera and/or limbal marker and method of using it in intraocular surgery according to the present invention are effective in refining the intraocular surgical techniques required in procedures such as cataract removal and intraocular lens implantation.
The use herein of the terms "sclera and/or limbus" and "sclera and/or limbal area" with respect to procedures involving the use of the present invention relate to the personal preferences of surgeons as to the location of making incisions for this type of surgery as opposed to corneal surgery.
A problem encountered in using ophthalmosurgical or skin marking devices of the prior art is that they are not adapted for use in cataract surgery to mark the sclera and/or limbus of an eye to indicate the location of sutures instead of or in addition to incisions.

Imagination Blindness - A Study of Images Reflected from the Cornea, Iris, Lens, and Sclera
The change in the curvature of the cornea during accommodation is so slight that the ophthalmometer, with its small image, fails to show it, and has therefore been supposed to demonstrate that the cornea did not change during accommodation.
The fact is mentioned, however, for the benefit of any one who may desire to repeat these observations.
The change was greater than those occurring under similar conditions with images reflected from other arts of the eye.

 Davies, Mol Vis 2003; 9:569-578.
The study design was to conduct experiments with cadaveric human sclera to assure that the same thickness and pore characteristics of sclera would be tested as might be found in human patients.
The pores may allow the sclera to behave as a hydrophilic network of fibers.
This differential behavior suggests that there were no large caliber "holes" in the scleral fragments (either naturally occurring or inadvertently introduced into the sclera during dissection or trimming).

 3 Objectives
One possible technique for counting the number of arteries present in the sclera is the zero-cross method, which involves the use of a low pass filter.
This can be implemented by sectioning the isolated sclera into windows for analysis, similar to superimposing a grid on the image.
This is especially true in the field of optometry where professionals are constantly classifying ocular health based on experience rather than quantified characteristics.
