The Body: New Mexico AIDS InfoNet -- Ritonavir (Norvir): Fact Sheet Number 442
Ritonavir is a drug used for antiviral therapy.
Ritonavir was approved in 1996 as an antiviral drug for people with HIV infection.

The Body: Project Inform -- Ritonavir Fact Sheet
Ritonavir is known to interact with many anti-HIV therapies and other drugs.
Ritonavir's potent anti-HIV activity makes it a good option for first-line therapy with other anti-HIV drugs, but its side effects and drug interactions may make it a less desirable option in this regard.
Ritonavir is able to increase the levels of other drugs, including other PIs, in the blood.

 MedlinePlus Drug Information: Ritonavir (Systemic)
Ritonavir can be used in combination with other medicines.
Ritonavir will not keep you from spreading HIV to other people.
Tell your health care professional if you are taking any other prescription or nonprescription (over-the-counter [OTC]) medicine.

 Aidsmap Ritonavir - overview
Ritonavir affects the working of many other medications and recreational drugs.
The cholesterol-lowering drugs simvastatin ( Zocor) and lovastatin should not be co-administered with ritonavir, although atorvastatin ( Lipitor) can be used with caution.
Interestingly, the latter study showed equivalent effectiveness in patients treated with ritonavir plus AZT and those treated with ritonavir alone, over 48 weeks.

 Ritonavir Price Hike Materials
The HIV Medicine Association (HIVMA) today called on Abbott Laboratories to rescind its recent 500 percent price hike of ritonavir (Norvir®), a drug necessary to the success of virtually all protease inhibitor combinations for treating HIV infection.
We are writing on behalf of the Board of Directors of the HIV Medicine Association to urge you to reconsider the recent 500 percent price increase of ritonavir (Norvir®), a drug which as you know is necessary to the success of virtually all protease inhibitor combinations for the treatment of HIV infection.
In addition to our particular concern about the price increase for ritonavir, we are generally concerned about continuing upward pressure on prices as each new HIV drug is approved.

Ritonavir price hike – the protests continue Treatment HIV Life Gay.com UK
They also applied to the government for a licence to manufacture generic versions of ritonavir and a Pfizer drug they also regard as overpriced, under the WTO agreement that allows companies to make their own versions of patented drugs in a public health emergency.
Abbott did not increase the price of its other protease inhibitor (PI) Kaletra ®, which contains ritonavir, leading to accusations it is trying to corner the market and crowd out competitors such as Roche’s saquinavir, which has just been licensed to be dosed with ritonavir.
Protests from doctors and Aids activists continue to mount in the US over the fivefold increase in the price of the HIV drug Norvir ® (ritonavir) made by Abbott Laboratories.

 Lopinavir + Ritonavir (Kaletra)
The ritonavir component of lopinavir/r is a potent inhibitor of cytochrome P450 3A (CYP3A) and CYP2D6, as well as an inducer of other hepatic enzyme systems.
Approval was based on a study( 1) showing comparable rates of viral suppression at 24 weeks of initial treatment in individuals receiving lopinavir/r + stavudine + lamivudine compared with those receiving nelfinavir + stavudine + lamivudine.
The co-formulation of lopinavir + ritonavir (lopinavir/r) received FDA approval in 2000 for treatment of HIV in adults and children age 6 months or older.

PUBPAT News > PUBPAT Testifies to NIH Regarding Key AIDS Drug Patents
If they are not, the government may "march-in" by exercising a license on any resulting patent rights so that the results of publicly funded research are made available to the public.
Essential Inventions, the consumer group that filed the request, argues that Abbott's raising of the per capsule price of Norvir from $1.71 to $8.57 was unreasonable and that the government should exercise its Bayh-Doyle march-in rights so that generic pharmaceutical companies can make a ritonavir capsule without being threatened by Abbott's patents.
"We have accepted the NIH's invitation to testify during the ritonavir march-in hearing in order to ensure that a clear analysis of the patent issues relevant to the march-in request are presented," said Mr.
