Left-handed - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Writing is not as good an indicator of handedness as it might seem, because many people who are left-handed write with their right hand and use their left for everything else.
In some parts of China, some adults can still remember suffering for the "crime" (with suitable traumatic punishments) of not learning to be right-handed in both primary and secondary schools, as well as in some "Keeping-good-face" families.
Basically, since the heart is on the left side of the body, a right-handed warrior (who holds his shield with his left hand to free the right hand for a weapon) would be better able to protect his heart and therefore more likely to survive.

Though the subject requires further research, one can generalize that artists of Leonardo's time who used the right hand to draw, in contrast, typically shaded forms with hatching in the opposite direction, with strokes coursing from upper right to lower left, or from lower left to upper right.
Whether Leonardo sometimes wrote in conventional left-to-right script was also the subject of especially heated debate among early scholars, though the consensus now is that he did.

 Handedness and Brain Lateralization
Some think that there are two types of handedness: (a) either left or right, or (b) either right or non-right, while others think there should be three categories (to include ambidexterity).
This association between hand and brain captured the imaginations of researchers because it would be so useful (so easy, so non-invasive, so cheap) to study patterns of brain asymmetries by using a person's handedness as a marker for brain lateralization (direct methods involve neurosurgery, invasive drug testing, or expensive imaging techniques).
Most people in our society define handedness as the hand you use for writing.

Science & Technology at Scientific American.com: Ask the Experts: Biology: What causes some people to be left-handed, and why are fewer people left-handed than right-handed?
Because the left hemisphere also controls the movements of the right hand--and notably the movements needed to produce written language--millennia of evolutionary development resulted in a population of humans that is biased genetically toward individuals with left hemisphere speech/language and right-hand preference.
Researchers who study human hand preference agree that the side of the preferred hand (right versus left) is produced by biological and, most likely, genetic causes.
These theories of hand preference causation are intriguing because they can account for the fact that the side of hand preference of individuals with the C gene (most left-handers and some right-handers) can be influenced by external cultural and societal pressures, a phenomenon that researchers have documented.
