FDA approval of interferon alpha-2b plus ribavirin for the treatment of individuals with chronic hepatitis C who "relapsed" after previous interferon alpha therapy was based on the results of two controlled, double-blind clinical trials involving 345 subjects.
Sustained responses were achieved in 43% of patients who received combination therapy for 48 weeks, 35% of patients who received combination therapy for 24 weeks and 19% of the patients who received interferon alpha-2b alone.
The sustained response rates were 31% and 38% for those receiving combination therapy for 24 or 48 weeks, respectively, compared to 6% and 13% for those receiving interferon alpha-2b alone for 24 or 48 weeks respectively.
