eMedicine - Renal Artery Stenosis/Renovascular Hypertension : Article by Ali Nawaz Khan, MBBS, FRCP, FRCR
Arterial dysplasias (AD) are uncommon angiopathy associated with heterogeneous histologic changes that may affect the carotid circulation and the visceral and peripheral arteries.
Patients with a moderate-to-severe renal insufficiency are at a significant risk of contrast material–induced acute tubular necrosis and atheroembolic renal failure, which could result in permanent or temporary dialysis.
Technical factors include false-positive examinations due to suboptimal angles, variation in operator experience, incomplete examination (because complete renal evaluation is cumbersome), the need to visualize the entire length of artery, transmitted cardiac and/or aortic pulsation (which may obscure renal waveforms), and different emphasis on variable parameters.

Explosive growth in renal artery interventional procedures; More cardiologists performing procedures
In 1996 radiologists performed 4,700 renal artery interventional procedures (balloon angioplasty, stent or both), while cardiologists performed 2,380, said Timothy Murphy, MD, associate professor of radiology, Brown University Medical School, and lead author of the study.
This trial will examine its affect on stroke, heart attack, heart failure and worsening renal function, he said.
Historically, these procedures were done by interventional radiologists.

 Renal Osteodystrophy
The reported predominance of each variety of bony change varies and doesn't correlate well with clinical findings or laboratory data.
The clinical presentation is influenced by the patient's age at onset of renal failure, the etiology of the renal disease, dietary content (protein, phosphate and calcium) and treatment modalities.
The major bony changes which can occur as a result of chronic renal failure are osteitis fibrosa cystica, osteomalacia or rickets, osteosclerosis and osteoporosis.
