Topic: Regurgitator

MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia: Mitral regurgitation - acute
Emergency surgery may be necessary if acute regurgitation is severe, usually resulting from endocarditis (valve infection), heart attack, or ruptured cordae (one of the supporting structures of the mitral valve).
Regurgitation (leaking from insufficient valve closure) is caused by diseases that weaken or damage the valve or its supporting structures.
These conditions may rupture the valve, the papillary muscle or chordae tendineae (the structures that anchor the valve cusps).

 dreddyclinic.com - Mitral Valve Regurgitation
Another problem of the mitral valve, mitral valve prolapse is a condition in which the leaflets and supporting cords of the mitral valve weaken.
High blood pressure makes mitral regurgitation worse, so if your blood pressure is elevated your doctor may prescribe medication to help lower it.
Mitral regurgitation is often first suspected when your doctor hears a new heart murmur.

Regurgitation also can develop acutely with myocardial infarction, secondary to papillary muscle rupture.
With acute mitral regurgitation, the ruptured chordae tendineae or papillary muscle, as well as perforated interventricular septum, can be visualized.
In the setting of acute regurgitation secondary to an acute myocardial infarction, a cardiologist should be involved early.

American Family Physician: Surgery for Chronic Aortic Regurgitation: When Should It Be Considered?
Determining the point at which surgery is needed is more difficult in patients with chronic aortic regurgitation than in patients with other valvular lesions.
The timing of surgery requires consideration of the etiology and pathophysiology of the aortic regurgitation, because aortic valve replacement carries morbidity and mortality that must be weighed against the potential problems of continued medical management.
However, Doppler echocardiography should be performed to confirm the presence of the regurgitation, quantify its severity and look for other cardiac problems (e.g., valvular vegetations, ventricular septal defect or aortic root aneurysm) that may be important in guiding therapy.

THE MERCK MANUAL--SECOND HOME EDITION, Mitral Regurgitation in Ch. 28, Heart Valve Disorders
If mitral regurgitation is severe, the chest x-ray may also show fluid accumulation in the lungs.
However, in people with moderate regurgitation, surgery increases the chance of a good outcome and reduces the risk of worsening heart failure.
In North America, Western Europe, and Australasia, a more common cause of mitral regurgitation is a heart attack, which can damage the supporting structures of the mitral valve.

 Mitral valve regurgitation
Mitral valve regurgitation can be an acute (sudden and generally more severe) problem or a chronic (long-term) problem.
The underlying cause of your heart valve's problem closing is related to a weakened or damaged valve.
You should discuss any history of heart valve disease with your doctor.
