Topic: Randomized controlled trial

Randomized controlled trial - definition of Randomized controlled trial in Encyclopedia
A randomized controlled trial (RCT) is a form of clinical trial, or scientific procedure used in the testing of the efficacy of medicine, used because of its record of reliability.
In practice, since the researcher knows, it is possible for them to treat the patient differently or to subconsciously hint to the patient important treatment-related details, thus influencing the outcome of the study.
The analysis of the trial results is a great skill in itself, and pharmaceutical firms employ groups of statisticians to try to make sense of the data.

 Ginkgo
The aim is to see if the herb prevents the onset of dementia and, specifically, Alzheimer's disease; slows cognitive decline and functional disability (for example, inability to prepare meals); reduces the incidence of cardiovascular disease; and decreases the rate of premature death.
NCCAM is conducting a large clinical trial of ginkgo with more than 3,000 volunteers.
Some promising results have been seen for Alzheimer's disease/dementia, intermittent claudication, and tinnitus among others, but larger, well-designed research studies are needed.

Although the animals did not fully recover all their bone density compared to controls, those rats fed oleuropin (0.15g/kg) or olive-oil (50 g/kg) daily for 3 months recovered 70-75% of their bone density—a 50% improvement compared to control animals, which were given 25g/kg peanut oil and 25 g/kg rapeseed oil daily.
In this double-blind, cross-over, randomized clinical trial, 30 healthy volunteers were given three similar olive oils whose concentration of antioxidant phenols ranged from 0 to 150 mg/Kg.
Their early studies revealed that two olive polyphenols, oleuropin and hydroxytyrosol, greatly lessen the inflammation-mediated bone loss involved in osteoporosis.
