eMedicine - Pulmonary Embolism : Article by Craig Feied, MD, FACEP, FAAEM
Although experience with the technique is limited, one study reported the complete recovery of 7 of 9 patients when cardiopulmonary bypass was used to stabilize the patients for operative embolectomy.
If emergency cardiopulmonary bypass is not available, several case reports suggest that immediate bilateral thoracotomy and massage of the pulmonary vessels may dislodge a saddle embolus and restore circulation to part of the pulmonary vascular tree.
Under the best of circumstances, the D-dimer study misses 10% of patients with positive pulmonary angiograms, while only 30% of those with a positive D-dimer will have a positive angiogram.

PERSISTENT PULMONARY HYPERTENSION OF THE NEWBORN
Persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn is a cardiopulmonary disorder characterized by systemic arterial hypoxemia secondary to elevated pulmonary vascular resistance with resultant shunting of pulmonary blood flow to the systemic circulation.
Abnormal responsiveness of the pulmonary vasculature to hypoxia with an inability to relax after the stimulus for vasoconstriction is removed, i.e.
This is especially important when pulmonary parenchymal disease exists, as improvement in alveolar oxygenation will often result in a normal relaxation of the pulmonary arteries and improved pulmonary blood flow.

 Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program
The Cheshire Medical Center's Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program provides a comprehensive outpatient program to serve the needs of chronic lung disease patients in our region.
Our goal is to improve the comfort, function and understanding for our patients who struggle with these challenging diseases.
The treatment of chronic lung disease ( eg Emphysema, Chronic Bronchitis and Pulmonary Fibrosis) is frequently complicated, confusing and frustrating for both patients and those who care for them.

Encyclopedia article on Pulmonary artery [EncycloZine]
Pulmonary hypertension occurs alone and as a consequence of a number of lung diseases.
It can be a consequence of heart disease ( Eisenmenger's syndrome) but equally a cause (right-ventricular heart failure); it also occurs as a consequence of pulmonary embolism and scleroderma.
In the human heart, the pulmonary trunk begins at the base of the right ventricle.

Early detection and treatment of DVT(clots of the legs) of patients who are at risk by early walking and activity after surgery can reduce the risk of pulmonary embolus.
A pulmonary embolism affects as many as 5 out of 10,000 people in the U.S. each year, and sudden death can occur as a result of pulmonary embolism.

 Encyclopedia4U - Pulmonary embolism - Encyclopedia Article
Many patients who have a pulmonary embolism have an underlying inherited predisposition that remains clinically silent until a stressor such as surgery, trauma, obesity, use of birth control pills, pregnancy, cancer, or immobilization occurs.
The diagnosis of pulmonary embolism (PE), suspected on the basis of shortness of breath and chest pain, with or without an abnormal x-ray, can be confirmed by a medical test called a "ventilation-perfusion scan" (or V/Q scan), which shows that some areas of the lung are being ventilated but not perfused.
The most frequent of these predispositions is a variant coagulation factor (Factor V Leiden) which occurs in about 3% of the population.
