Psychological testing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Neuropsychological tests are specifically designed tasks used to measure a psychological function known to be linked to a particular brain structure or pathway.
Of course, individually-administered tests are more expensive to administer because of the need for a trained administrator (psychologist, school psychologist, or psychometrician), and the limitation of working with just one client at a time.
Psychological testing is a field characterized by the use of small samples of behavior in order to infer larger generalizations about a given individual.

 Psychological Testing or Psychometrics
Testing uses a range of different types of behaviour as indicators of the underlying psychological characteristics it sets out to measure: from self-reported feelings, attitudes, and behaviour, through the person's ability to cope with various types of problem, to observation of performance in structured tasks.
Tests (of which there are many thousands) are designed to measure various aspects of intellectual and emotional functioning, including personality traits, motivation, beliefs and attitudes, ability and intelligence, and various areas of emotional concern.
Not all aspects of human psychology lend themselves to formal testing and test results are never used exclusively by psychologists, but may be used in conjunction with other forms of assessment.

 Psychological Testing Psychological Assessment
Psychological tests are usually administered and interpreted by a psychologist because studies in psychopathology, along with academic courses and supervision in psychological testing, are an integral part of the doctoral degree in clinical psychology.
Sometimes a psychologist who runs a clinic or has a private office will use legally registered assistants (in California these persons are called “psychological assistants” or “registered psychologists”) or student interns to administer and score psychological tests under his or her direct supervision.
When you are disqualified from a job application for psychological reasons, it means that there are things about your behavior and attitudes that you don’t recognize and that seem of concern to the psychologist evaluating you.

 About Psychotherapy - Psychological testing
Any test is no more or less than a sample of behavior, just as are a patient’s words during a therapy session.
The resistance to testing results is often similar to that experienced by parents with child psychotherapy.
Not only could a low score on some particular test be the result of five or six different cognitive -- intellectual -- problems, but the tester must consider the subject’s mood, attitude, rebelliousness, anxiety level, attention, motivation, etc. A test battery is only as good as the psychologist who interprets it.

 Psychological Testing Studies
The approach used in the psychological testing studies proposed herein is to develop measures "from scratch" that are appropriate for deaf individuals rather than adapting or translating existing psychological tests.
Neither the use of traditional psychological tests nor ASL translations of psychological tests have yet been shown to be effective for this purpose (Brauer, et al., 1999; Leigh and Pollard, in press).

Prospects and Limitations of Psychological Testing on the Internet
In this context, it should be mentioned that computerized clinical psychological tests have been found to be of much psychometric as well as practical value in clinical practice (Kobak et al., 1996).
This problem is associated with the fact that test-takers of Internet-based psychological tests are practically left alone in case of failure or what may be labeled as negative personality assessment.
Third, Internet-based psychological tests may also provide efficient service to professionals—psychologists of different specialties, psychiatrists, clinical social workers, guidance counselors—who may refer clients to a test readily available on the Net as an integral component of the counseling or psychotherapeutic process.

 Psychological Evaluation
Psychological evaluation is generally performed by a licensed psychologist when a problem, that does not have a physical origin, is noticed and the cause needs to be determined.
Testing cannot necessarily pinpoint the precise cause of the disturbance, especially if it is a complex emotional issue, but it will give a number of clues that can help the parent and the professional guide the child in the right direction.
The purpose of evaluation is to determine what is happening in the individual's psychological life that may be blocking their ability to behave (or feel) in a more appropriate and constructive manner.
