Psychological research is a matter of vindication: vindicating a program, a therapy, a view, or a way of describing experience and behavior.
As a student in several psychological research methods courses, I was taught that experiments were the best way to conduct research.
And the qualitative methods, with a worldview where experience is primary, where meaning is central, and where the world is more created than discovered, is based on ontological and epistemological assumptions that meaning and phenomenology is primary and that meaning is created.

 Psychological Research Methods and Statistics
This is partly because it is such a diverse discipline, ranging from biological aspects of behaviour to social psychology and from basic research questions to problems that arise in such applied fields as clinical, educational, and industrial or occupational psychology.
Naturalistic observation, as its name suggests, is a research method used to study naturally occurring behaviour without interacting with the subjects who are being observed.
In addition, some research questions are concerned not with causal effects but with whether and to what extent two or more variables are related, and in these cases correlational studies are obviously the methods of choice.

Guidelines for Ethical Conduct in the Care and Use of Animals
Important parts of these endeavors are teaching and research on the behavior of nonhuman animals, which contribute to the understanding of basic principles underlying behavior and to advancing the welfare of both human and nonhuman animals.
In addition to the federal requirements to provide for the psychological well-being of nonhuman primates used in research, psychologists are encouraged to consider enriching the environments of their laboratory animals and should keep abreast of literature on well-being and enrichment for the species with which they work.
It is therefore necessary that psychologists and their assistants be informed about the behavioral characteristics of their animal subjects, so as to be aware of normal, species-specific behaviors and unusual behaviors that could forewarn of health problems.

For subjects' responses to be true indicators of the behaviors and psychological processes of interest, subjects must be caught up and invested in what's going on in the experiment.
To this end, psychologists use the scientific method to observe, to test, to predict, and to explain behavior.
Psychology puts it all together and rests on the general principles that (a) questions and controversies about behavior are best addressed through empirical methods, (b) hypotheses must be logical, testable, and falsifiable, and (c) theory, integrated sets of principles that systematically explain and predict behavior, should guide and be guided by sound empirical research.

While I think using psychological theories as aids to think about games and gamers is certainly useful, I think that psychology has much more to offer than theory.
This lack of specificity in psychological theories hasn't really hurt designers too much, because in the most part designers (and people in general) have a decent enough idea of how to please people without needing formal theories.
An enormous part of the value of psychology to games lies in psychological research methods (collecting data), not the theories themselves.
