This book was recommended to read as part of the Counselling Studies course at Clapham College.I found this book so well written, it's the first counselling book that I have found easy to read.I had trouble putting it down.

Present Centred Awareness - A Path to Psychological Freedom
Psychotherapy is essentially a process designed to alleviate mental distress by initiating psychological change in a manner which is both personally meaningful and socially constructive (Muzika, 1990).
At the personal level, where individuals need direction and sense of meaning, Gestalt or Existential therapies may prove to be the appropriate vehicles.
Most Western psychotherapies are directed at the personality and usually work at strengthening the self to make it more able to bear pain and to experience pleasure (Muzika, 1990).

 What is the Person-Centred Approach?
An important part of Rogers' theory is that in a particular psychological environment, the fulfilment of personal potentials includes sociability, the need to be with other human beings and a desire to know and be known by other people.
Although initially developed as an approach to psychotherapy (eventually becoming known as client/person-centred therapy/counselling), Rogers and his colleagues came to believe that their ideas could be transferred to other areas where people were in relationships: for example, teaching, management, childcare, patient care, and conflict resolution.
This environment could be achieved when being in a relationship with a person who was deeply understanding (empathic), accepting (having unconditional positive regard) and genuine (congruent).

Family counselling - keeping the focus positive
A plethora of counselling approaches have been developed in the last fifty years or so, spawned largely from the emergence of the psychological sciences in the 19th century.
The focus of psychology, social work, psychotherapy or counselling then, has traditionally been one of working with clients' problems and on problem-solving as a hallmark of professional expertise, and in challenging clients to learn to self-disclose, and to recognise and name their dysfunction, and then perhaps, to commit to change.
Many clients come along expecting the focus of counselling work to be problem focused, and the worker may also need to engage the client in a gradual educational process before clients can begin to focus on their own strengths.

Randomised controlled trial of non-directive counselling, cognitive-behaviour therapy, and usual general practitioner care for patients with depression: clinical effectiveness
Brief psychotherapy (such as non-directive counselling or cognitive-behaviour therapy) is widespread in general practice in Britain.[1] Recent randomised controlled trials of the effectiveness of non-directive counselling have suggested that it is no more effective than usual general practitioner care.
Three groups were considered in the analysis: participants randomised between three arms, those randomised to psychological therapy (using either allocation procedure), and those who chose their treatment.
