 Protein S Deficiency
Beginning long-term anticoagulation is influenced by the patient's overall risk of recurrent thrombosis balanced against the risks associated with long-term anticoagulation on an individual basis.
Long-term anticoagulation has risks associated with it (approximately a 3% chance per year of having a major hemorrhage, of which approximately 1/5 are fatal).
This figure does not separate patients who had predisposing conditions from those who do not.

Ask Dr. Stephan Moll - Protein S deficiency
Clearly, the risk of clotting varies from family to family and from individual to individual, and we often do not understand why some families and individuals with protein S deficiency clot and others not.
This makes genetic testing for the defect very difficult, time-consuming, and expensive; it is therefore not done in routine clinical practice.
Homozygous individuals have such a severe clotting problem, that they typically die immediately after birth because of clotting everywhere; this is termed " Purpura fulminans ".

Cow's Milk Allergy; Food Allergy at the Children's Center
One study showed whey hydrolysate formula reduced the incidence of atopy in the first year of life in infants at risk; 21.8% of infants on whey hydrolysate presented atopic symptoms compared with 48.6%.
Furthermore, milk antigens tend to get through the GIT mucosa intact and are therefore responsible for a host of delayed immune responses which do not depend on IgE and do not show up on skin tests.
Cow's milk allergy does cause intestinal bleeding in infants.

Protein Research: Western Blot Protocols, Troubleshooting and Theory  ( http://www.westernblotting.org)
The process by which the higher structures form is called protein folding and is a consequence of the primary structure.
This is because the structure of each form of protein is slightly different, and some may trigger a response from the immune system while others are perfectly safe.

My website aims to skew progress and bring more light upon PSD which affects about 1 in 20,000.
Protein S is involved in the blood clotting process and a deficiency can put people at risk of developing clots (=thrombosis).
The condition of Protein S Deficiency can be acquired but is also hereditary and it is hoped that through the efforts of researchers it may be possible to find a cure.

 Meat: what's the alternative?
There’s no flavour to it, but its sponge like texture means it marinates and absorbs flavours well in cooking, and it does have a realistic meat-like texture, especially in traditional mince dishes such as lasagnes and spaghetti Bolognese.
Made from a myco-protein derived from the mushroom family, it’s grown using a natural fermentation process, and is then combined with a small amount of egg white and vegetable flavours to help give it the taste and texture of meat.
Quorn is low in fat and high in protein and fibre, and readily absorbs flavours in cooking, so works well in stir-fries, curries, casseroles and marinades (see recipe below).

An autosomal dominant disorder showing decreased levels of plasma protein s antigen or activity, associated with venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.
Protein s is a vitamin k - dependent plasma protein that inhibits blood clotting by serving as a cofactor for activated protein c (also a vitamin k-dependent protein), and the clinical manifestations of its deficiency are virtually identical to those of protein c deficiency.

Protein C activity is enhanced by its cofactor, Protein S. Deficiency of Protein C is associated with thrombosis, from superficial thrombophlebitis to serious deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.
Von Willebrand Factor (vWF) is a procoagulant protein, that mediates platelet adhesion to sites of vascular injury and protects F.VIII from proteolytic cleavage in circulation.
It is a necessary cofactor for Protein C and deficiency may lead to serious thrombotic events.
