Proprioception - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Proprioception (from Latin proprius, meaning "one's own" and perception) is the sense of the position of parts of the body, relative to other neighbouring parts of the body.
David Bohm introduced the concept of "proprioception of thought." His ideas suggest that other people's point of view are needed to be able to compensate for the inevitable self-deceptive assumptions of thinking.
The proprioceptive sense can become confused because humans will adapt to a continuously-present stimulus; this is called habituation or desensitization.

 Proprioception: how and why?
Proprioception is "the process by which the body can vary muscle contraction in immediate response to incoming information regarding external forces," by utilizing stretch receptors in the muscles to keep track of the joint position in the body (1).
With the sense of proprioception our lives are made less complicated, and we are given the ability to learn and utilize many movement patterns freeing the I-function to focus awareness on new tasks and thoughts.
While proprioception is necessary for learning a type of movement or skill involving muscle, concentration from the I-function is essential as well.

The Missing Link - March 2005 - Rehab Management - The Interdisciplinary Journal of Rehabilitation
Proprioception is defined as the ability to sense the position, location, orientation, and movement of the body and its parts.
Agility and proprioceptive training should be built in to the treatment plan to better enable the individual to return to preinjury levels of activity and reduce the risk of reinjury upon return to sport.
Proprioception training has been an effective intervention for improving functional stability at the ankle joint, as well as the knee and shoulder.

Researchers concerned with proprioception have usually directed their studies toward identifying in what processes proprioception plays a major role, and what processes may be hindered if proprioception loss is severe.
Proprioception can be described as the mind's awareness of the body.
Proprioception research should not just be dedicated to what proprioception is responsible for, but how to help those who have proprioceptive loss.

The Physician and Sportsmedicine: Refining Rehabilitation With Proprioception Training
Proprioceptive challenge can be applied to the shoulder using techniques such as quadruped stabilization on a balance board (figure 4), which can stimulate proper stabilization of the scapula in a closed-kinetic-chain position.
Proprioceptive programs need to be tailored to the individual patient, but exercises can include balance training, closed-kinetic-chain exercises such as the leg press or single-leg hops, back-strengtheners, and quadruped stabilization.
While conscious proprioception enables proper joint function in sports, activities, and occupational tasks, unconscious proprioception modulates muscle function and initiates reflexive stabilization of joints by way of the muscle receptors (2).

 David Seaman, DC, MS, DABCN
Proprioception was defined by Sherrington in 1906 as, "the perception of joint and body movement as well as position of the body, or body segments, in space (1,p.84)." It is commonly thought that proprioceptors in joints and muscles receive proprioceptive input.
Explain that the proprioceptive system includes tissue mechanoreceptors, afferent pathways, the spinal cord, brain stem, cerebellum and cerebral cortex.
Recall that proprioception generally refers to the perception of body position.

 Training for Proprioception
Proprioceptive trace is an after-effect of the immediate proprioceptive experience.
Proprioception is unconscious initially, but can be enhanced with training, according to Greg Niederlander, an exercise physiologist.
Of a handful of terms recently used in the fitness industry, proprioception and kinesthetic awareness are the most widely recognized in relation to body awareness.

 Improving Proprioception
Proprioception is defined as "sensing the motion and position of the body".
Mechanoreceptors in the joints along with the muscle spindles of the foot muscles are responsible for the positive support reflexes and a variety of automatic reflexive reactions.
The first research to demonstrate how altered proprioceptive input predisposes to recurring injuries was performed on patients with chronically sprained ankles.

BACKGROUND ART Proprioception is the awareness of one's own body position.
The role of proprioception in improving athletic performance, in preventing joint injuries, and in rehabilitation is becoming more recognized as detailed in, for example,"Refining Rehabilitation With Proprioception Training: Expediting Return To Play"by Edward R. Laskowski et al., The Physician and Sportsmedicine, Vol.

Proprioception is the sense (not one of the 5 human senses) that tells us where our body parts are positioned without having to see them or feel them.
For example, to base the assesment truely on proprioception alone, ones waking body needs to be floating or in a a position that no other of the 5 senses can be utilized.
Perhaps if you knew what proprioception is, you would see what i mean.

Proprioception is defined as the awareness of posture, movement, and changes in equilibrium and the knowledge of position, weight and resistance of objects in relation to the body.
The findings of no effect of fatigue on proprioception in this study are inconsistent with similar protocols used by Skinner in the knee (9) and Voight in the shoulder (10).
The studies by Lentell (4), Garn (3) and Bullock-Saxton (5) showed that individuals with chronic ankle injuries had demonstrable deficits in several indices of proprioceptive measure.

Those patients with greater hamstring muscle dominance attained better proprioceptive performance when tested.3 Because the hamstring muscles are synergistic to the normal ACL, this type of muscle development would also improve stability of the ACL-deficient knee.il Muscle strength testing was beyond the scope of our study.
Reconstructive techniques are being refined continuously in an effort to stabilize the knee in as near a normal fashion as possible, yet the duplication of the functional structure of the ACL is still elusive to the modern orthopaedic surgeon.
With ACL reconstruction, physiologic movement of the knee is restored; capsular and other secondary restraint structures are not stretched further, and remaining proprioceptive output is physiologic.

It is a mistake to apply the terms "subjective" or "objective" to either proprioception or perception, since it encourages the confusing of different problems.
So there can be no perception without an implied proprioception, nor can there be any proprioception without some awareness, however dim, of the environment in which the body exists.
The perception of the (stable) environment and the proprioception of the (mobile) body are reciprocal.

But visual information is processed far slower than proprioceptive information, reaching the brain approximately 70 milliseconds after the information from the body.
Modern neuroscientists use the word to refer to the sensory information coming from sensors in the body - telling us where it is and what it is doing.
By far the most dominant of all the feedback our brains receive is the information we get from our eyes.

Are you saying that thought or behavior can occur independently of physico-chemical changes in the nervous system?" No. The point is to emphasize that the brain is context-bound by the physical (bodily) and social worlds within which it finds itself.
In proprioception, I have an inner sense of how the various parts of my body 'communicate' among one other (cf.
However, this does not affect the position of 'embodied cognition' or 'incarnation' (here termed "proprioception"), since the debate on the existence of consciousness is an ontological one, unlike our descriptive or methodological stance.

 COGNITIVE SCIENCE: ON PROPRIOCEPTION
Their signals are so tightly integrated that it is impossible to unravel them through introspection, a view which seems to favor vision as the primary sense organ of the mind.
The search for the sensory system with which the blind guide their movements revealed that the body's sense of posture and movement relies on different types of tiny receptors densely packed in the muscles and tendons.
Signals from this sensory orchestra are sent by afferent nerves through the spinal cord to the somatosensory, motor and parietal cortices of the brain, where they continuously feed and update dynamic sensory-motor maps of the body.

Proprioception exercises should begin early in the rehabilitation process.
They are designed to restore the kinesthetic awareness of the athlete and to form the basis for the coordination, agility, strength and endurance required for return to participation.
Some clinicians recommend having the athlete stand single-legged or hop in place, or both, while others use a mini-tramp and watch for loss of balance or compensatory shoulder motion.

Abstract: Manipulation in immersive virtual environments is difficult partly because users must do without the haptic contact with real objects they rely on in the real world to orient themselves and their manipulanda.
To compensate for this lack, we propose exploiting the one real object every user has in a virtual environment, his body.
