 Prenatal Testing
For 20 years, amniocentesis has been the primary method available for assessment of the developing fetus.
During amniocentesis, the physician uses a thin needle to remove about three teaspoons of the amniotic fluid surrounding the fetus.
Abnormalities often occur in the very early weeks of the baby's development, and we have, as yet, no way to prevent them.

 Prenatal Testing for Down Syndrome
In diagnostic tests, a positive result very likely means the patient has the disease or condition of concern.
A needle is inserted through the mother's abdominal wall into the uterus, using ultrasound to guide the needle.

 Prenatal Tests
Other prenatal tests are diagnostic in nature, which means they can determine with a fair degree of certainty whether a fetus has a specific problem.
As an expecting parent, you should take the time to educate yourself about these tests and to think about what you would do if a health problem is detected.

 Prenatal Testing
To help answer questions concerning your baby's well-being, prenatal tests are available to help identify potential problems that could endanger you and your unborn child.
Even when conditions cannot be treated, parents often gain valuable time to prepare emotionally and practically for the birth of a child with special needs.

The DNA Files - PRENATAL GENETIC TESTING - The Topic In-Depth
Many prenatal tests, however, leave great ambiguity as to how severely the detected condition will affect the child.
If you are considering genetic testing, a genetic counselor can help you navigate all the new information and make your own choices about when to test and how to respond to the results.
Instead, even as studies about the psychological and social effects of genetic testing go forward, parents are making decisions and living with the consequences on their own.

 Amniocentesis
Amniocentesis is a prenatal test that allows you and your practitioner to gather information about your baby's health and development from a sample of your amniotic fluid.
Only about 5 percent will be found to have a baby with a problem.
In deciding whether to have this test, you'll need to weigh your desire to know about your baby's condition with the slight risk that the test could lead to a miscarriage.

 Prenatal screening
The triple test is not 100% reliable, there are incidences when there is a negative test, and the child is born with Down syndrome the reason for this is not always known.
A study performed by Jo-Anne Finegan in Toronto followed 88 women who had, had amniocentesis, there was an increased incidence of ear infection in this group.
This is one of the reasons why amniocentesis has only been offered to over 35's (since they have a much higher risk of having a Down syndrome child)

 Prenatal Testing
During amniocentesis, using sterile instruments and the aid of ultrasound, a thin needle is guided through the abdomen.
To perform this test, the mother is either given a drug called oxytocin to make her uterus contract, or she is told to rub one of her nipples lightly, which causes her body to release oxytocin naturally.
It is used to examine the fetal heart rate, muscle tone, body movement, and the amount of amniotic fluid present.

HealthCentral.com - Best Doctors - What Is The Role Of A Genetic Counselor In Prenatal Testing? - (7/10/2000)
Most of the discussion around invasive prenatal testing, or what happens after an abnormal ultrasound, or what’s done in the triple screen, is done primarily by genetic counselors and not by physician geneticists like myself.
The most important point is to have accurate and current information that can be delivered by someone who is familiar with the area and is knowledgeable about a particular test and the interpretation of its result.
Even though I am a physician, most of the discussion surrounding prenatal diagnosis is done by the master’s level genetic counselors.

 Prenatal Testing
But what is even more distressing to me is that women actually allow their bodies to be invaded repeatedly with these dangerous tests.
Or is it just the fact that women still "do as they are told" rather than taking responsibility for their health and finding out about whether they really want these tests or not?

Guided by ultrasound, a long needle is inserted into the uterus and fluid is extracted.
Many persons with genetic disorders such as spina bifida, Down's syndrome, and cystic fibrosis still lead rich and rewarding lives and are only mildly affected, though some disorders may present themselves as more severe.
Although many doctors feel that it's best to have as much information as possible, a positive test can cause an unnecessary amount of stress and worry.

Boston.com / News / Boston Globe / Health / Science / Boston doctors slow to adopt new testing methods
In New York, California, Pennsylvania and elsewhere, there is no such prohibition, though physicians need appropriate consent from the patient to perform the procedure, which usually involves inserting a thin hollow needle and catheter through the woman's vagina and cervix.
Lim, who trained in Maryland and performs about 120 of the tests per year, expects no change any time soon in the Massachusetts law.
For legal and perhaps cultural reasons, Boston doctors have been slow to adopt the method of testing, which detects fetal chromosomal defects such as Down syndrome as early as 11 weeks into a pregnancy.

Discovery of the gene for Cornelia de Lange syndrome
Families having one child affected by CdLS have only a one percent chance that a subsequent child will be affected.
The finding is expected to lead to a genetic test, enabling rapid and definitive diagnosis of the syndrome, as well as prenatal testing for families who already have one child with the disease.
When a genetic test for CdLS is developed, said Dr. Krantz, physicians will be able to provide a definitive diagnosis to confirm or rule out a clinical diagnosis.

With PGD, couples are much more likely to have healthy babies, Although PGD has been practiced for years, only a few specialized centers worldwide offer this procedure.
Commercialized gene tests for adult-onset disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and some cancers are the subject of most of the debate over gene testing.
The tests give only a probability for developing the disorder.
