Premature birth - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Furthermore, often premature birth is accompanied by a difficult NICU course and therefore parents are forced to confront difficult decisions about their child's care.
Premature babies may be released from the hospital when they no longer need the constant hospital care the NICU provides.
When conditions permit, doctors may attempt to stop premature labor, so that the pregnancy can have a chance to continue to full term, thereby increasing the baby's chances of health and survival.

 A Primer on Preemies
Premature infants are prone to a number of problems, mostly because their internal organs aren't completely ready to function on their own.
Premature infants have many special needs that make their care different from that of full-term infants, which is why they often begin their lives after delivery in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
Some premature infants may require speech therapy or physical therapy as they grow up.

Depending on the degree of prematurity, the infant may not start breathing after birth, or respiratory efforts may be inadequate to expand the chest and deliver oxygen to the infant's body.
When premature labor develops and cannot be stopped by medical intervention, plans for appropriate management of a premature baby and the mother are made, which may involve transport of the mother to a center with facilities to care for premature infants, i.e.

UAMS Scientists Confirm Link between Premature Birth and Later Learning, Behavioral Problems
By observing the progress of premature infants who receive pain medication in conjunction with painful medical procedures, and through laboratory experiments, he has formed the hypothesis that repetitive pain in the first weeks of life causes the death or damage of certain brain cells and may consequently reduce learning ability and alter behavioral development.
The UAMS investigators speculate in JAMA that the medical complications of prematurity; the painful medical procedures that many premature babies experience in hospitals; and prolonged separation from their mothers all may contribute to lower-than-average brain development and thus to later learning and behavioral problems.
While the relationship between prematurity and later learning and behavioral problems is now clearer, the actual causes of those problems in children born prematurely are not yet clear.

CNN.com - Study links long time for conception, premature birth - Oct. 31, 2003
Premature birth -- when the baby is delivered before 37 weeks of pregnancy -- is a major public health concern because underdeveloped babies are at increased risk of death in the first year of life and are more likely to develop heart, lung and brain disorders if they survive.
The study is the largest ever conducted on infertility and birth outcomes.
Olga Basso of the University of Arhaus in Denmark and Dr. Donna Baird of the U.S. National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences analyzed nearly 56,000 singleton births in Denmark, where women had reported early in their pregnancies how long it took them to get pregnant.

The Neonatal Research Network follows thousands of infants, through its 16 clinical centers throughout the country, to conduct clinical trials and observational studies for preventing and treating problems related to pregnancy, premature birth, and the newborn period.
Through this and other NICHD-supported research into the problems faced by premature infants, survival rates for premature infants with RDS are nearly 95 percent.
The NICHD is currently conducting and sponsoring a number of clinical trials involving infants born prematurely.

But the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) says more research is needed to determine which women would benefit most from the treatment and what is the best way to use the drug.

The researchers cautioned that the ultrasound technique they used to assess cervical length should not be tried without the supervision of a sonologist who has experience with the technique.
A short cervix early in the second trimester of pregnancy appears to be a warning sign of impending premature birth among women who have previously given birth prematurely, according to a study by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development's (NICHD) Maternal Fetal Medicine Units (MFMU) Network.
For this reason, he said, women with shortened cervixes and a history of preterm birth should not undergo cerclage unless they are taking part in a clinical study to determine if cervical cerclage is effective.

Short Cervix Early in Pregnancy Linked to Premature Birth; Study Could Improve Babies' Odds - StopGettingSick News
The study is significant because premature births _ those happening before the 37th week of pregnancy _ are so common, affecting about 10 percent of all pregnancies in the United States, said Dr. Catherine Spong, chief of pregnancy and perinatology at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
The condition later in pregnancy has been linked to premature births, but the new study shows it may also be a problem when found much earlier.
Spong said, however, that more research is needed to determine if the findings apply to all pregnant women since the study only involved women who'd previously had premature births.
