Topic: Phthiraptera

 Taxonomy
Papers presented at the Second International Congress on Phthiraptera provide strong, some may say overwhelming, evidence that there is no morphological, molecular, or behavioral justification for recognizing the Head Louse as being a distinct species or subspecies from the Body Louse.
The lice found on humans are Sucking Lice and are placed in two different families.
Thus these two common names should be replaced by the common name Human Louse, the scientific name is Pediculus humanus, as used by Kim et al (1986) and others.

 Introduction to the Phthiraptera
For information on human lice and how to treat lice infestation, read this fact sheet created by the New York State Department of Health.
Since the Phthiraptera as we know them today are restricted to birds and mammals, lice probably did not come into existence before the Jurassic -- although ancestral Phthiraptera might have fed on the ancestors of birds (dinosaurs!) and of mammals in the Triassic.
Lice are insects that have secondarily lost their wings and become ectoparasites -- external parasites -- on birds and mammals.

 Phthiraptera
Unlike many other ectoparasites, the Phthiraptera cannot survive long if separated from the body of their host.
All Phthiraptera are wingless external parasites of birds and mammals.
The name Phthiraptera is derived from the Greek " phthir " meaning lice and " aptera " meaning wingless.

 Phthiraptera
His study supported the monophyly of the Phthiraptera, with Anoplura and Rhyncophthirina forming a monophletic group, sister group to the Ischnocera ; the Amblycera are the sister group of this assemblage.
This working hypothesis seems to have received general support amongst most leading lice systematists.
As permanent ectoparasites of most birds and mammals they exhibit a remarkable level of host specificity which is unparalleled in most other metazoan parasites.

Glasgow ePrints Service - Dramatically elevated rate of mitochondrial substitution in lice (Insecta : Phthiraptera)
Here we use novel methods for estimating relative rates of substitution, which incorporate multiple substitutions, and apply these methods to a group of insects (lice, Order: Phthiraptera).
First, we use a modification of copath analysis (branch length regression) to construct independent comparisons of rates, consisting of each branch in a phylogenetic tree.

These insects are able to fold their wings back, flat over their bodies; the term neopterous indicates this condition.
