Philosophical counseling - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Philosophers have an extraordinarily rich repertoire of theoretical perspectives at their disposal and therefore are especially adept at seeing the implications and assumptions behind the theories guiding all of the various approaches to psychological therapy.
Many philosophical counselors are hesitant to call philosophical counseling "therapy".
The key to philosophical counseling generally is its client-centered and open-ended nature, one which does not manipulate the client's thinking so as to bring him to accept some particular philosophy as the "Truth." The philosophical counselor's intention is to help his client reach any reasonable and morally permissible goal the client has set for herself.

 philosophical counseling
For while the philosophical training of the counselor provides the impetus for stimulating a client's thought-processes, the point of philosophical counseling should not be to provide the client with new life-directing conceptions.
Philosophical counselors can facilitate effective philosophical thinking in a client by entering into philosophical dialogue with the client's life-world for the purpose of revealing the concrete influence of abstract, life-directing conceptions in the client's everyday life.
Philosophical counseling can provide assistance to people who seek conceptual clarification in their life, but this assistance will promote an authentic awakening in the client only when the dialogue disguises the practitioner's role as the dominant partner in the counseling session.

Many philosophical counselors draw the line between a psychological analysis of clients' lives (e.g., examining the precipitating events, antecedents, cue-responsiveness, causes, and mental conflicts that affect adjustment and behavior) and a conceptual analysis of clients' worldviews, belief systems, propositional attitudes, and rational justifications underlying the philosophical assumptions about their sense of self and the world.
Indeed, philosophical counseling strives to uncover and analyze the various meanings and interpretations that clients assign to their lives, fleshing out implicit presuppositions, contradictions, inconsistencies, and cryptic patterns and processes that are associated with their worldviews.
Philosophers are drawn to certain philosophies over others, not only because of intense study and philosophical rumination over the rational superiority of each approach, but because certain philosophies coalesce with their personal ways of being.

That being said, philosophical counselors overwhelmingly understand themselves to be operating according to a methodology that is thoroughly subject to rational evaluation, even at those points where non-rational methods are (intentionally) included in the thought process.
Our thesis is that maintaining a philosophical disposition, along with ability to use some critical and constructive techniques typical of philosophical counseling practice, can provide an additional measure of conceptual power with which to address problems and possibilities of negotiation.
Philosophical counseling makes use of both critical and constructive techniques.
