Oncology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Oncology is the medical study and treatment of cancer.
A physician who practices oncology is an oncologist.
The use of the latter is not always advised; rather, the patient is encouraged to learn to "live with [approaching] death", when every therapeutical possibility has been attempted.

 Pediatric Oncology Nursing Review
Theory and clinical practice components are taught to provide the pediatric oncology nurse with an in-depth knowledge base and understanding of the principles of cancer treatment therapies and supportive therapy provided to the pediatric population.
The complex role and responsibilities of the pediatric oncology nurse in managing patients and families in a holistic manner is emphasized throughout the course.
A number of case studies are presented during the class for discussion for the application of evidence-based best practice theory to actual clinical practice.

At the same time, advances in immunology are providing reagents capable of regulating immune function or altering host-defense systems in ways that may permit the use of current cytotoxic regimens in more rational and tolerable schedules and formulations, as well as the development of combined modality therapy utilizing both cytotoxic therapy and immunotherapy.
We evaluate principles of therapy (e.g., “therapeutic window,” combination immunotherapy and chemotherapy) for tumors that have been shown to be refractory to current therapies.
During the past decade, there has been considerable progress in understanding fundamental processes in the pathogenesis of pediatric cancers.

 Pediatric Oncology Studies
Because the majority of pediatric patients receive cancer therapy as participants in clinical research protocols, participation in oncology trials has become the standard of care in pediatric oncology.
A Written Request for pediatric studies of a drug for pediatric oncology will usually be issued in the context of an overall development program for the drug.
One of the important goals of these groups is to develop improved novel therapies, and encouraging early access to new drugs is one mechanism to achieve this goal.
