Topic: Paraplegia

Paraplegia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Central nervous system: Any disease process affecting the pyramidal tract of the spinal cord from the thoracic spine downward may lead to paraplegia, as this structure transmits "instructions" for movement from the brain to the anterior horn.
It is usually the result of spinal cord injury or a congenital condition such as spina bifida, but polyneuropathy may also result in paraplegia.
While in theory the arms should also be affected, the fibres that supply the legs are longer and hence more vulnerable to damage.

With paraplegia, individuals cannot “feel” their affected body parts, and are generally insensitive to pain or heat.
The level of spinal cord damage associated with paraplegia varies depending on the causes of the paraplegia, and the methods of treatment for paraplegia complications are symptom-related.
There is not a cure for spinal cord injury or paraplegia, but therapies - both psychological and medical - can ease emotional and physical symptoms.

paraplegia. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001-05
Paraplegia and quadriplegia are caused by an injury or disease that damages the spinal cord, and consequently always affects both sides of the body.
Treatment of paraplegia and quadriplegia is aimed at helping to compensate for the paralysis by means of mechanical devices and through psychological and physical therapy.
The extent of the paralysis depends on the level of the spinal cord at which the damage occurs.

First International Symposium On Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia - Office of Rare Diseases
Physical therapy is an important part of the management of spastic paraplegia, particularly in children, whose growth depends on balanced muscle strength and tone.
The group agreed that although the term "hereditary spastic paraplegia" (HSP) is not accurate for many affected individuals ("paraplegia" means "paralysis of the legs," which most individuals are not--a more correct term would be "paraparesis," which means "weakness of the legs"), it is a well-recognized term which we will continue to use.
The third session of the day was spent discussing conditions that are not typically included under the heading "spastic paraplegia," but perhaps could be.

This strategy, reported online on December 15 in advance of print publication in the January 2006 issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, holds promise for many other disorders characterized by nerve degeneration due to loss of function of a known gene.
