Topic: Otolaryngology

 MEEI-Otolaryngology
Otolaryngology is a broad field, but has been subdivided into several subspecialty areas, given the complex nature of the disorders of the head and neck, and their surgical treatment.
Improved techniques in otolaryngology have occurred in the inpatient as well as the outpatient arena involving procedures such as skin grafts used in reconstructive surgery and neuro-otology (the combination of neurology and otology).
A full range of specialty medical and surgical care - including otology and facial nerve disorders, rhinology and sinus disorders, laryngology and bronchoesophagology, pediatric head and neck malignancies and skull base lesions, congenital deformity, and other related problems - is provided to infants and children.

 Otolaryngology Residency
All aspects of otolaryngology are emphasized, including surgery of the temporal bone, surgery of benign and malignant head and neck neoplasms with appropriate emphasis on reconstructive techniques, maxillo-facial trauma, pediatric otolaryngology, and diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy.
This goal is obtained through a wide range of clinical material available through several affiliated hospitals within the Capital District; didactic lectures of head-neck and temporal bone anatomy, basic science, and disease states; and the provision of research time and support.
The underlying philosophy of the program is that the modern otolaryngologist must be a competent head and neck physician and surgeon.

 Otolaryngology Residency
Otolaryngology rotations are scheduled in the beginning and end of the surgical internship in order to provide an early introduction to our faculty and residents.
These rotations reinforce the resident’s skills in basic otolaryngology surgery and general otolaryngology clinical practice.
As the resident’s surgical skill develops, his/her experience progresses to involve sinus surgery, head and neck cancer surgery, tympanoplasty and cosmetic facial surgery, etc. A unique feature of our otolaryngology program is the early participation of our residents in cases which are often reserved for senior residents in many other otolaryngology residencies.
