Near-death experience - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Many see near death experiences as an afterlife experience, and some accounts include elements that they say are most simply explained by an out-of-body consciousness.
Jansen, K. Using ketamine to induce the near death experience: mechanism of action and therapeutic potential.
They are somewhat common, especially since the development of cardiac resuscitation techniques, and are reported in approximately one-fifth of persons who revive from clinical death.

Ring goes on to say that he believes that it is possible and plausible to regard the near death experience as playing a critical role in personal development.

Religious groups and scientists are divided on the issue, of the near death experience, and if it offers any evidence of life after death.

 The NT Daily -
Holden said research in near death experiences has increased, and is also the president of the International Association of Near Death Studies, Inc. In 2001 a major study on Near Death Experience was published in the Lancet, a medical journal in the United Kingdom.
Positive results in this research would lend credibility to what near death experiencers are saying and potentially influence some of our most basic beliefs about what humans are and why we are here." Research in this part of human life may also help individuals who deal with people facing their own mortality.
"I think that near death experiences are dealing with a more acute experience of death," he said.

 Near Death Experiences
People who have undergone near death experiences often report feeling literally revitalised by the event.
However, the escape from the grasp of death that characterises the context for these experiences is itself intriguing.
With the development of modern technology, more people today are likely to undergo experiences where they approach death, or even step over the line between the living and the dead before returning to a conscious state.

 Modeling Near Death Experience (NDE)
Psychology researcher Hans Eysenck, usually a sceptic when it comes to psychological studies, says he is convinced that, despite the absurdity of the claim, existence beyond death is the best hypothesis accounting for the evidence of this research (Eysenck and Sargent, 1997, p 209-213).
In the actual Near Death Experience, the participants report having infinite time to process every moment of their life even though this seems to happen at enormous speed.
Dr Ring's studies concern people who have had their pulse and other vital signs stop during some medical crisis, and then been revived, and who then claim to recall these events.

 Discovering secrets of near-death
NT faculty member and president of the International Association for Near Death Studies, Janice Holden studies phenomenon associated with near-death experiences.
The nonprofit organization was established in 1978 and incorporated in 1982 as the first in the world to foster research in near-death studies.
According to that theory, all cardiac-arrest patients should have near-death experiences, but only 12 percent of the patients in the study reported one, Holden said.

 Near Death Experiences
Professor Paul Badham of Lampeter University - who studies the philosophical implications of near death experiences - said that despite media hype, the phenomenon is quite rare.
He says that people who report near death experience sometimes "see" things that it would have been impossible for them to see if they had been unconscious on an operating table.
He said: "Not everyone who is near death has this experience - it just does not follow that it is a last physical response to death.

 near-death experiences (NDEs)
Or, they may be telepathic communications from doctors, nurses, or others in attendance when the subject is near death.
Or, they may be mixed memories composed after waking up and hearing others talk about what was happening while one was near death.
Two M.D.s who have popularized the idea that the NDE is proof of life after death are Elizabeth Kübler-Ross and Raymond Moody, who coined the expression 'near-death experience'.

 Near-Death Experiences
This book breaks new ground in the field of near-death studies by focusing on the meaning of the near-death experience for the survivor and for human evolution.
The authors propose a new theory of brain/mind interaction and provide case studies of actual near-death experiences and their consequences.
The author describes her life-changing near-death experience, during which she was drawn into a brilliant golden light and experienced a complete sense of peace before returning with a spiritual message.

 Near-Death Experiences - Bibliography
The International Association for Near-Death Studies was founded in the USA in 1980 and more scientific studies of the NDE began to appear at the same time.
The first was Kenneth Ring's Life at Death (1980), which laid out a five stage understanding of the NDE - feeling of peace, detachment from the body, tunnel, encounter with a being of light, entry into the light.
Most science has been based on this latter perspective (which finds its reductio ad absurdum in behaviourism) with its concomitant assumption that brain processes give rise to consciousness and that the death of the brain therefore represents the extinction of personal consciousness.

Near-Death Experiences, Shamanism, and the Scientific Method
Harner's experience is of an ego death, rather than a physical death, and similar to the experiences reported by Grof and Halifax (1977) in their early work in psychedelic psychotherapy.
The unknown and terrifying world of death assumes form, is organized in accordance with particular patterns; finally, it displays a structure and, in course of time, becomes familiar and acceptable.
Little by little, the world of the dead becomes knowable, and death itself is evaluated primarily as a rite of passage to a spiritual mode of being.

The Experience The near-death experience (NDE) is among the most powerful experiences that a person can have, one of a family of experiences which may occur with or without being close to death.
To others, more cautious, the experience is not "proof," but it suggests that some aspect of human consciousness may be independent of the body and may survive physical death.

 AllRefer.com - near-death experience (Religion, General) - Encyclopedia
Near-death experience is an emotional issue, believed to be a profound spiritual experience by some and criticized as wish fulfillment by others.
The light is sometimes described as a benevolent "being of light" who directs the person in a review of his or her life so far and ultimately prevents the person from crossing some sort of boundary that signifies death.
Their findings and a belief in a spiritual explanation for the phenomenon have been supported by Elisabeth KUbler-Ross, who pioneered the study of death and dying in the United States beginning in the late 1960s.
