Transverse Myelitis: Symptoms, Causes and Diagnosis
"Acute transverse myelitis: incidence and etiological considerations." Neurology, 1981; 31:966.
The term myelitis is a nonspecific term for inflammation of the spinal cord; transverse refers to involvement across one level of the spinal cord.
Just what percentage of patients with a first attack of acute transverse myelitis will go on to develop MS is unclear in the medical literature, ranging from 15 to 80%; however, the majority of studies show a low risk.

MYELITIS - LoveToKnow Article on MYELITIS
The treatment for myelitis in its acute stage is similar to that for spinal meningitis.
Good is sometimes derived from massage and the use of baths and douches to the spine.
In the acute variety the nerve elements in the affected part become disintegrated and softened, but repair may take place; in the chronic form the change is slower, and the diseased area tends to become denser (sclerosed), the nerve-substance being replaced by connective tissue.

 Myelitis
Myelitis is a disorder of the spine marked by inflammation of the spinal cord.
Myelitis is characterized by inflammation of segments of the spinal cord which can cause local back pain, usually followed by gradual spinal cord dysfunction.
Myelitis patients exhibit thick, rough, dry skin below the spinal lesion, and tendon reflexes may be lost.

Myelitis in this respect refers to inflammation of the myelin of the spinal cord; transverse simply describes the position of the inflammation, that is, across the width of the spinal cord (Tabor 1999).
Transverse myelitis is a neurological disorder characterized by inflammation across both sides of one level, or segment, of the spinal cord.
Transverse Myelitis may also result from a spinal injury or, as in a recent case, subsequent to an epidural or spinal anesthetic given during childbirth.

Transverse myelitis -- Facts, Info, and Encyclopedia article
A major differentiation or distinction to be made is a similar condition due to compression of the spinal cord in the spinal canal, due to disease of the surrounding vertebral column.
Before doing this, routine x-rays are taken of the entire spine, mainly to detect signs of metastatic disease of the vertebrae, that would imply direct extension into the epidural space and compression of the spinal cord.
The lesions can be present anywhere in the spinal cord, though it is usually restricted to only a small portion.

 Non-Compressive Myelopathies
Acute transverse myelitis differs clinically from myelopathy of multiple sclerosis; the former is more symmetrical, rapidly evolved, frequently having ascending involvement of the spinal cord, and initially a condition of spinal shock is present for variable period of time.
The myelopathy usually presents as subacute transverse myelitis because of intense inflammation and granulomatous response against ova of parasites in the parenchyma of the spinal cord.
This myelopathy is characterized by vacuolar degeneration of the posterior and lateral columns, clinically resembling subacute combined degeneration of spinal cord.
