 Muscular Dystrophy
Muscular dystrophy (MD) is a genetic disorder that weakens the muscles that help the body move.
The life expectancy (in other words, how long a person may live) for many of these forms of muscular dystrophy depends on the degree to which a person's muscles are weakened as well as how much the heart and lungs are affected.
Myotonic (pronounced: my-uh-tah-nick) dystrophy (MMD) is a form of muscular dystrophy in which the muscles have difficulty relaxing.

There are many forms of muscular dystrophy, some noticeable at birth (congenital muscular dystrophy), others in adolescence (Becker MD), but the 3 most common types are Duchenne, facioscapulohumeral, and myotonic.
NINDS health-related material is provided for information purposes only and does not necessarily represent endorsement by or an official position of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke or any other Federal agency.

 Welcome - Muscular Dystrophy Association
Muscular Dystrophy Association researchers are at the forefront of international research; they already know the genetic faults responsible for several conditions and are investigating possible treatments.
A It is a name given to several different conditions which have in common the breakdown of muscle fibres leading to weak and wasted muscles.
The reason for this is back in the 1950s and 60s when scientists started to research the field, they recommended that the general diagnosis of ‘muscular dystrophy’ which was often given, should be separated into various distinct forms of the condition and many other allied neuromuscular conditions.
