Sarcopterygii: By contrast, the maxilla is relatively immobile in sarcopterygians.
In our own ancestors, the Rhipidistia, the maxilla is slight, but the jaw, maxilla and all, is considerably elongated -- presumably to a point at which it became impractical to rely on an immobile shoulder girdle for ultimate posterior support.
This is particularly significant because it brings the jugal into contact with the ectopterygoids, giving the jugal at least a peripheral palatal role.

Anteriorly, between the orbital surfaces, the frontal bone articulates with the anterior portions of the nasal bones and frontal processes of the maxilla.
The palatine processes of both maxillae articulate with each other in the midline and with the horizontal plate of the palatine bone posteriorly.
Inferiorly, a concave process projects medially to articulate with the zygomatic process of the maxilla, forming the lateral portion of the infraorbital rim.

Chapter 9 On the Twelve Bones of the Upper Maxilla, Including the Bones of the Nose
In this part one cannot agree with Galen, who teaches that the upper maxilla is without marrow and constructed of hard bones that have no need of lightness because this bone, unlike the lower maxilla, does not move.
The bones of the upper maxilla are connected to each other by sutures, but in such a way that joints which are effected by harmonia [sutura plana] may also be called sutures.
The order of sutures in the upper maxilla and the number of its bones is, I believe, much easier to demonstrate than to explain in writing.

Chapter 10 On The Lower Maxilla
In man, however, the maxilla consists of a single bone, and it is broad at the end of the chin, not sharp as in animals.
It is also for this reason that the inside of the maxilla near the chin swells with a number of tubercles or rough places (H in fig.
The Maker of things contrives this for the insertion of muscles, not unaware that something adheres and attaches more readily to rough and uneven places than to level and smooth ones.

Maxilla - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Each bone consists of a body and four processes - zygomatic, frontal, alveolar, and palatine.
When the maxillae are articulated with each other, their alveolar processes together form the alveolar arch; the center of the anterior margin of this arch is named the alveolar point.
The maxillae are the largest bones of the face, except for the mandible, and form, by their union, the whole of the upper jaw.
