To set up the "lure" coursing course a line composed of braided fishing line (usually 100 pound test 'trolling' line) is passed around a series of pulleys staked to the ground within a large field (at least 5 acres).

Lure coursing is a field event designed for sighthound breeds in which a lure (usually a white plastic bag) is attached to a continuous loop pulley system which can be laid out in different patterns over an open field.
While lure coursing is not a perfect approximation of open field coursing (a greyhound's historic employment) it is the closest thing available to us here on the East Coast.
Open Field Coursing is still an option for many sighthound owners in the Western states where hares are in abundance, and coursing them with hounds is legal.

Lure coursing equipment is that which is used to create an artificial or mechanical lure (often referred to as "the bunny") which can travel at speeds in excess of 50 mph.
Lure coursing is "funnnnn" for the dogs...they do it because they want to run fast and chase an artificial lure...they cannot be forced to chase a lure.

 Training for Lure Coursing
Extremely young hounds (those under four months) should not be allowed to run at all at a lure coursing practice, even for the shortest distance; rather, they should be given the opportunity to watch other hounds practice for as long as their attention spans will allow.
While my experience in the sport of lure coursing spans a short time (just over nine years), I have been fortunate to have competed all over the country with two very memorable hounds, both of whom are in the ASFA All-Time Top 10 for Irish Wolfhounds.
Hopefully with this article, I will be able to translate the secrets to their successes as well as some theories of mine into methods both the novice and experienced lure coursing enthusiast can use to train their respective hounds.
