 Lumpectomy
The combination of lumpectomy and radiation is commonly called breast-conserving therapy.
The evidence shows that lumpectomy followed by radiation IS likely to be equally as effective as mastectomy for women with:

Lumpectomy Still Good Choice for Women
Lumpectomy preserves as much of the breast anatomy as possible and is followed by radiation therapy to reduce the chance of recurrence.
Of the 237 women, one-half underwent modified radical mastectomy and one-half had lumpectomy and radiation therapy.
In fact, other studies have indicated that though survival rates for these procedures are similar, women who opt for lumpectomy have higher rates of recurrence, with some cancers developing 20 years or more later, writes Poggi.

 Lumpectomy aHealthyAdvantage
In 1992, when the National Cancer Institute made its recommendations in favor of lumpectomies for early-stage breast cancer, it based that conclusion on five clinical trials involving 1,447 women who had lumpectomies followed by radiation therapy, versus 1,407 women who had mastectomies.
All were similar in terms of their emotional and social well-being, with two exceptions: women who had had mastectomies with reconstruction reported more problems with their sex lives, and those who had undergone lumpectomies had somewhat better body images than women in the other groups.
This is a decision that you need to make with your doctor, and it depends greatly on the stage of the cancer and its location.

 Early Stage Breast Cancer
Since radiation reduces the chances of recurrence for women choosing lumpectomy, it is important that patients and their doctors consider the required time commitment to radiation therapy before deciding which surgical procedure is best for them.
After the health professional explains surgical options, such as breast-conserving surgery (often called lumpectomy) with radiation, modified radical mastectomy, or simple mastectomy, these are the questions most patients will want to ask.
Doctors who were trained within the last 20 years, and work at university-based medical centers, may be more aware of the recent research indicating that lumpectomies are just as safe as mastectomies, and may have received more training on how to perform a lumpectomy.

Before surgery, tests such as a chest X-ray, a complete blood chemistry, and a urinalysis must be performed to determine your body's ability to tolerate surgery and anesthesia.
The two treatments combined, surgery and radiation, have proven to be as effective as the modified radical mastectomy.
For women who choose not to have radiation, modified radical mastectomy is the treatment of choice.

 Benefits of Radiation After Lumpectomy
Still, this study shows that getting radiation therapy after lumpectomy is unlikely to increase your survival beyond what tamoxifen can do alone.
The researchers also looked at a group of 193 women age 60 or older who had hormone-receptor-positive cancer that was one centimeter or smaller.
If you want to do everything possible today to lower the risk of ever seeing the cancer again, and lower the chance that you'll ever need a mastectomy, then radiation after lumpectomy may be a very important step for you.

Most patients with DCIS that have a lumpectomy are treated with radiation therapy to prevent the local recurrence of DCIS (although some of these DCIS patients may be candidates for close observation after surgery).
The advantage of BCT is that the patient will not need a reconstruction or prosthesis to appear like she did before the procedure.
BCT always needs to be combined with radiation therapy to make it an option for treating breast cancer.

Low Lumpectomy Rate Due To Doc Bias
The researchers conclude that the deciding factors in the lumpectomy versus mastectomy debate are the physician's biases and choices coupled with the patient's choice.
"Or, lumpectomy may not be presented as the preferred option out of [the surgeon's] belief that survival is equivalent, but instead is presented only because the surgeon believes a choice must be offered."
Lumpectomy, often referred to as breast-conserving therapy, involves surgical removal of the tumor and the surrounding tissue, and is thought to be less disfiguring and psychologically devastating than mastectomy, which involves removal of the entire breast.

Can The Standard Course Of Radiation Therapy Following Lumpectomy Be Shortened?
In an effort to reduce the burden of treatment on women, Freedman and his colleagues at Fox Chase Cancer Center are studying a four-week course of radiation using IMRT (intensity-modulated radiation therapy) with an incorporated boost.
Fox Chase Cancer Center researchers have presented preliminary results of a clinical trial in which women received a two-week shorter course of radiation therapy than the current standard following a lumpectomy.

 Mastectomy v. Lumpectomy: Who Decides?
One logical explanation is that doctors trained after 1981 were trained to do lumpectomies and are more knowledgeable about the research showing the safety of lumpectomy.
A study of 157 hospitals in North Carolina found that patients were more likely to undergo breast-conserving surgery if their surgeons were trained after 1981.
Moreover, some insurance plans do not cover all the expenses of the lumpectomy or the radiation therapy, because they are usually outpatient procedures.

'Male Lumpectomy' Works for Prostate Cancer
Technically, the procedure is known as focal cryosurgery, and it's exactly that -- a focused freezing of only the portion of the prostate that's affected with cancer and some surrounding tissue.
Another expert agrees there is great potential for the localized treatment, which like breast lumpectomy, provides a less invasive but still viable treatment for some patients.
March 17, 2004 -- Early evidence shows that a new procedure for prostate cancer, dubbed the "male lumpectomy," may be highly effective, less invasive, and result in fewer side effects than what is typically seen with current treatments.

Lumpectomy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As the tissue removed is generally quite limited and the procedure relatively non-invasive (compared to a mastectomy for example), a lumpectomy is considered a viable means of "breast conservation" or "breast preservation" surgery, with all the attendant physical and emotional advantages of such an approach.
Lumpectomy is a common surgical procedure designed to remove a discrete lump (usually a tumour, benign or otherwise) from an affected woman's breast.
