Topic: Lactase

Lactase treated feeds to promote growth and feeding tolerance in preterm infants
Lactase is the last of the major intestinal disaccharidases to develop in preterm infants.
Weight gain (g/day) on day 14 after study entry was higher in the lactase treated feeds group [MD 2.7 g/day (95% CI -1.47, 6.87)] and on study exit it was higher in the lactase treated feeds group [MD 2.2 g/day (95% CI -0.98, 5.38)] (neither of these were statistically significant).
Further studies should include the most immature preterm infants (24-25 weeks gestation) as the lactase levels in the intestinal tract are even lower in that group of infants.

Since the latter may lead to avoidance of calcium sources and may exacerbate the bone disease in populations at risk, we studied lactose tolerance and histomorphometrically analyzed undecalcified transiliac bone biopsies in a consecutive group of postmenopausal women with the osteoporotic spinal compression fracture syndrome.
This test and its clinical usefulness are reviewed in some detail, and the use of lactulose as an indicator of intestinal transit is also discussed.

This is a temporary condition that's common in the first few weeks of life and may even persist for several months.
That said, if your otherwise healthy newborn has very watery stools and is passing a lot of gas, he may have what is known as functional lactase deficiency, which means that he's not yet able to completely digest lactose.
Finally, some babies become temporarily lactose intolerant after a gastrointestinal illness or taking a course of antibiotics, which can damage the lining of a normal digestive tract and render it unable to produce as much lactase as usual for a few days or even a few weeks.

Lactose Intolerance - Healthy Kids and Pediatrics - health and medical information produced by doctors
A diagnosis of lactase deficiency is made when the amount of lactase in the intestine is reduced, but a diagnosis of lactose intolerance is made only when the reduced amount of lactase causes symptoms.
For unclear reasons, even persons with moderate deficiencies of lactase may not have symptoms.
Unfortunately, these symptoms can be caused by other gastrointestinal conditions or diseases, so the presence of these symptoms are not very good at predicting whether a person has lactase deficiency or lactose intolerance.
