Topic: Labyrinth (inner ear)

 The Ear
The middle ear is a small cavity which conducts sound to the inner ear by means of three tiny, linked, movable bones called "ossicles." These are the smallest bones in the human body and are named for their shape.
The inner ear is a very delicate series of structures deep within the bones of the skull.
The inner ear analyzes sound waves and contains an apparatus that maintains the body's balance.

Balance Disorder - disruption in the labyrinth, the inner ear organ that controls the balance system, which allows individuals to know where their bodies are in the environment.
The labyrinth works with other systems in the body, such as the visual and skeletal systems, to maintain posture.
Normal balance depends on information from the labyrinth in the inner ear, from other senses such as sight and touch, and from muscle movement.

There is no consistent morphological change observed in the inner ears of humans or animals subjected to high doses of salicylates.
Although it commonly refers to hearing loss resulting from degenerative changes in the cochlea alone, it is now clear that the aging process affects the whole auditory system and that hearing loss of old age probably involves changes in the middle ear, inner ear and central auditory pathways.
Although there is no clear relationship between age-related changes in the middle ear and the audiographic findings, there are documented cases of ossicular fixation and arthritic changes in ossicular joints with fibrous and calcific changes.

The sense of balance is maintained by complex relationships between sense organs that are located in the ears, eyes, joints, skin, and muscles.
As already mentioned, the cochlea is that part of the inner ear involved with hearing.

Once the inner ear (labyrinth) is identified, the entire bony inner ear is surgically removed.
It is important to remember that this is all theory supported by the appearance of microscopically examined inner ears from deceased patients who had Meniere's Disease during their lifetime.
Total deafness in the affected ear is the expected result of the surgery.

Pathophysiology: The anatomic relationships of the labyrinth, middle ear, mastoid, and subarachnoid space are essential to understanding the pathophysiology of labyrinthitis.
Clinically, this condition produces disturbances of balance and hearing to varying degrees and may affect one or both ears.

Labyrinthitis and Neuronitis: Infections of the Inner Ear
Since the whole inner ear is about the size of a dime, many infections affect both the hearing and balance systems and produce both kinds of symptoms.
This may result from a systemic infection, in which the rest of the body is also affected by the virus, or the virus may damage the inner ear without affecting other organs.
The symptoms associated with suppurative labyrinthitis are similar to those of serous labyrinthitis, but they are usually pronounced from the beginning and rapidly become very severe.

 Inner-Ear Problem
Most cases of vertigo—the feeling that you or your surroundings are spinning—are associated with inner ear problems.
It’s quite possible since the inner ear contains the vestibular labyrinth, a loop-shaped structure that helps people maintain balance.
Inside the loops are fine hairlike sensors, fluid and tiny particles that send signals about your head position to the brain.

 Inner Ear
The parts of the labyrinths of the inner ear include a "cochlea" that function in hearing, and three semicircular canals that function in providing a sense of equilibrium.
The inner ear consists of a complex system which communicates through chambers and tubes called a "labyrinth." There are two labyrinths in each ear.
The "osseous labyrinth" is a bony canal in the temporal bone; the "membranous labyrinth" lies within the osseous one and has a similar shape.

Labyrinth (inner ear) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The labyrinth is a system of fluid passages in the inner ear, comprising the vestibular system and the auditory system, which provides the sense of balance.
The brain receives, interprets, and processes the information from these systems that control our balance.
The vestibular system works with the visual system to keep objects in focus when the head is moving.
