The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS, or UNAIDS, is the main advocate for accelerated, comprehensive and coordinated global action on the HIV epidemic.
UNAIDS is an innovative joint venture of the United Nations family.
As the main advocate for global action on HIV/AIDS, UNAIDS leads, strengthens and supports an expanded response aimed at preventing the transmission of HIV, providing care and support, reducing the vulnerability of individuals and communities to HIV/AIDS, and alleviating the impact of the epidemic.

At the special session, Member States of the General Assembly of the United Nations are expected to agree on a declaration of commitment that will strengthen political commitment and intensify efforts in the global fight against HIV/AIDS.
From June 25 to 27, 2001, the United Nations General Assembly will convene a special session on HIV/AIDS in New York to review the problem in all its aspects and to secure a global commitment to combat the epidemic.
UNAIDS is guided by a Programme Coordinating Board with representatives of 22 governments from all parts of the world, representatives of the 7 UNAIDS Cosponsors, and 5 representatives of non-governmental organisations (NGOs), including associations of people living with HIV/AIDS.

In industrialized nations, the results of research and effective intervention have drastically reduced mother-to-child transmission of HIV to less than 2%.
There are approximately 800,000 to 900,000 people currently living with HIV in the U.S., and 200,000 of those people do not know that they are infected, putting them at the highest risk of spreading the infection.

 Preventing HIV Infection: UNFPA
There is new evidence that sustained, intensive programmes in diverse settings are reducing HIV incidence through behaviour changes such as increased use of condoms, delayed sexual initiation and fewer sexual partners.
