Intussusception - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An intussusception is a situation in which a part of the intestine has prolapsed into another section of intestine, similar to the way in which the parts of a collapsible telescope slide into one another.
In children too young to communicate their symptoms verbally, they may cry, draw their knees up to their chest or experience dyspnea.
Fast treatment is a necessity, because the longer the intestine segment is prolapsed the longer it goes without bloodflow, and the less effective a non-surgical reduction will be.

 Intussusception
Intussusception is a condition that develops when one part of the intestine folds into itself, like a telescope.
A child with intussusception may have recurring episodes of severe abdominal pain and may scream and draw up his or her knees from severe cramping.
However, in children who have other diseases that involve their intestines, intussusception may develop into a more serious problem that requires surgical removal of the affected section of the intestine.

 Case Based Pediatrics Chapter
Intussusception recurs in up to 5% to 10% of the cases reduced by contrast enema and about 1 to 5% of those reduced by surgery, though most recurrences are late recurrences (after the patient has been discharged).
If the intussusception is not reduced by an enema, or if there is intestinal perforation, shock, or peritonitis present, the patient is sent for surgical reduction.
Several factors are associated with a contrast enema being unsuccessful in reducing the intussusception.

Although controversy surrounds the optimal surgical approach for correction of intussusception in cattle, we recommend initially attempting surgical correction by a right paralumbar laparotomy with the cow restrained in a standing position.
Because the true survival rate for cattle with intussusception is suspected to be less than that determined from reports published elsewhere, an accurate assessment of outcome would be valuable.

Differences between crystals and organized bodies have no bearing on the problem of life, for organic substance must be compared with a liquid rather than with a crystal, and differs in structure no more from inorganic liquids than these do amongst themselves, and less than they differ from crystals.
But inorganic liquids also grow in the latter mode, as when a soluble substance is added to them.
Living matter is a mixture of substances chiefly dissolved in water; the comparison with the crystals has led to a supposed distinction in the mode of growth, crystals growing by the superficial apposition of new particles and living substance by intussusception.
