Intervertebral disc - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is called a slipped disc, and the nuclear pulposus may press against nerve roots, causing radicular pain.
All along the spine, near the posterior side of each disc, the major spinal nerves extend out to different organs, tissues, extremities etc. It is very common in such injuries for the herniated disc to press against these nerves (pinched nerve) causing radiating pain, numbness, tingling, diminished strength and/or range of motion.
The same is possible in the arms, hands, feet shoulders, neck and face.

 Thoracolumbar Intervertebral Disc Disease
The thoracolumbar spine (back) is the location of a disc rupture in about 80% and the cervical spine (or neck) in about 20% of the patients seen.
Disc degeneration occurs in almost any breed, but small breed dogs are overrepresented with the condition (Dachshunds, Beagles, Basset Hounds, Pekingese, Cocker Spaniels, Poodles, etc.).
This is the reason why disc disease in humans usually leads "only" to a "pinched nerve." In small breed dogs however, a disc rupture will, with very few exceptions, always lead to compression of the spinal cord.

 Canine Intervertebral Disk Disease
However, due to the subjective nature of the interpretation of the presence or absence of deep pain perception, it is probably wise to extend the "window" of time in which aggressive medical and surgical therapy is attempted to 48 hours.
Intervertebral disk disease is a major neurologic problem affecting both canines and humans.
A third source of pain from intervertebral disk disease arises when nerve roots are entrapped by herniated disk material.

Arthritis Research & Therapy Full text Degeneration of the intervertebral disc
Disc degeneration-related pain is also treated surgically either by discectomy or by immobilization of the affected vertebrae, but surgery is offered only to one in every 2000 back pain episodes in the UK; the incidence of surgical treatment is five times higher in the USA [93].
It is believed that such an injury initiates a pathway that leads to disc degeneration and finally to clinical symptoms and back pain [83].
It alters disc height and the mechanics of the rest of the spinal column, possibly adversely affecting the behaviour of other spinal structures such as muscles and ligaments.

 Intervertebral Disc Replacement
Intervertebral disc replacement is a surgical technique for the treatment of low back pain related to degenerative disc disease.
Approaches to restoration of the function of a degenerated or dysfunctional disc include techniques of biological reconstruction and techniques of artificial disc replacement.
The Spinal Disorders Division at UC San Francisco is currently investigating intervertebral disc regeneration using techniques of cellular and molecular biology, and investigating intervertebral disc arthroplasty (artificial joint creation) at a clinical trial center.

 What's Hot- Degenerative Disc Disease
Still the mainstay of surgical treatment for the painful degenerative disc is that of spinal fusion surgery, which may be done from the anterior approach, posterior approach or both, with and without hardware placement.
Discs can degenerate in the Cervical, Thoracic or Lumbar spine.
If it is a part of the clinical picture an IDET (Intradiscal Electrothermal Therapy) approach can be taken.

EURODISC - Intervertebral Disc Degeneration: Interplay of Age, Environmental and Genetic Factors
Disc function is dependent on a balance between matrix synthesis and matrix breakdown.
Because of the complex nature of disc degeneration-related disorders, a multidisciplinary approach is necessary to identify what causes the intiation and progression of degenerative changes in the intervertebral disc.
This, in turn, causes further disc degeneration which alters the spinal mechanics and leads to painful and disabling conditions.

 ACCG:Neurology:Disc Disease
Disc disease does occur in large breed dogs but here the age incidence is similar to that found in most people i.e.
This is because herniated discs in humans occur mainly in the low lumbar area, which is occupied by nerve roots and not by spinal cord.
In dogs and cats, most disc herniations compress the spinal cord and so cause varying degrees of weakness in the rear limbs rather than the pain that occurs most commonly with nerve root compression in humans.

 Intervertebral Disc
The incidence of a second intervertebral disc extrusion that would also require surgery for resolution of the problem is less than 1% in the cervical area and less than 3% in the thoracolumbar area.
It is often the result of a massive disc extrusion accompanied by hemorrhage in the spinal canal and/or within the spinal cord.
Because of these facts, early recognition of a disc problem is extremely important, and early intervention often means the difference between a very good prognosis and paralysis for life.

Intervertebral Disc Disease - Thoracolumbar Area - PetPlace.com
Thoracolumbar (T-L) disc disease is a condition that occurs when pressure is placed on the spinal cord by disc material that herniates beneath or adjacent to the cord.
Radiographs of the spine may be helpful to localize the affected disc space, but definitive diagnosis of spinal cord compression is usually obtained by injecting a dye into the spinal canal, a procedure called a myelogram.
Then a “window” is made in the spinal bone to relieve the pressure on the spinal cord and to allow access to the disc material so that it can be removed.

 Intervertebral Disc Disease
Before surgery can be done, radiographs (x-rays) and a myelogram (a special x-ray in which dye is injected around the spinal cord) must be performed to identify the area of the spinal cord that is involved.
These dogs require surgery to remove a section of bone over the spinal cord (hemilaminectomy), and to remove the herniated disc material in order to relieve the pressure on the cord.
Your dog has had a decompressive hemilaminectomy (the removal of bone over the area of spinal cord compression).

Topics of Interest > Intervertebral Disc Disease
Surgery is the treatment of choice in dogs whose ruptured disc causes paralysis.
The goals of surgery are to decompress the spinal cord (relieve the pressure off of the spinal cord) and, if possible, to remove the ruptured disc material from the spinal canal.
This is very delicate surgery since the work involves the tissues immediately surrounding the spinal cord, but, if done early, it usually carries a good prognosis.

 AllRefer.com - slipped disc (Pathology) - Encyclopedia
Material from the disc may press on spinal nerves and cause numbness or tingling, weakness, or paralysis in the area of the body enervated by those nerves.
If natural healing fails to occur surgery may be required to remove the disc, and the affected vertebrae fused to keep them from rubbing together.
Treatment consists of bed rest, usually with a hard board placed beneath the mattress, local application of heat, and the administration of muscle relaxants to relieve spasms.

 Home-Intervertebral Disc Disease
Before a disc ruptures, it degenerates from a soft, rubber consistency to a stiff material that can then escape from between the vertebrae and end up next to the spinal cord.
However, since more than 95% of degenerated discs will heal without surgery, the chance of a dog requiring surgery a second time is less than 5%.
Pressure on the spinal cord and/or the nerves that leave the spinal cord over the discs results in back pain and/or loss of nerve information transmission.

 Intervertebral disc disease
One method for surgically relieving the pressure on the spinal cord is fenestration, in which the protruding disc material is removed from the intervertebral space by means of a needle or a scraper.
Various sensory and motor "circuits" are contained in specific parts of the spinal cord and the type of paralysis, plus the presence or absence of pain, are clues from which the extent of damage to the cord can be deduced.
The location of the protruding disc, and the extent of the resulting spinal cord injury determine what signs the dog will show.

The intervertebral discs form an elastic cushion between the vertebrae, which allows movement, minimizes trauma and shock and helps connect the spinal column.
Treatment with corticosteroids to alleviate spinal cord pain can be dangerous because dogs that are pain-free tend to become more active (instead of rest) with the consequence that additional intervertebral disc can herniate and irreversibly compress the already damaged spinal cord.
Surgical therapy is used if the dog is not improving or getting worse with cage rest and if signs of incoordination are present.

 Artificial Intervertebral Disc
There is no evidence that disc replacement reliably, reproducibly, and over longer periods of time fulfills the three primary objectives of clinical efficacy, continued motion, and few adjacent segment degenerative problems.
When conservative treatment of degenerative disc disease fails, a common surgical approach is spinal fusion; over 200,000 spinal fusions are performed each year.
However, the outcomes of spinal fusion have been controversial over the years, in part due to the difficulty in determining whether a patient’s back pain is related to degenerative disc disease and in part due to the success of the procedure itself.

 Herniated Intervertebral Disc by Globalspine.net
Disc herniation occurs in the lumbar spine 15 times more often than in the cervical portion of the spine.
This material may bulge or push out through a tear in the disc wall, causing pain when it touches a nerve.
Only 1 to 2% of the intervertebral disc herniations occur in the thoracic (upper-to-mid-back) spine region.

 Herniated Discs
Surgical indications should be strictly defined as failure to relieve radicular pain or radiculopathy despite appropriate conservative treatment for at least 6 weeks, and imaging study showing herniated disc that correlates clinically.
This is because the lumbar spine carries most of the body's weight.
Among conservative treatments mentioned, pain relief with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) and a gradual exercise program rather than bedrest is important for maximal recovery.
