INABIS '98 - Illness, Cytokines, and Depression
The aim of the present review is to present the current knowledge on the role of cytokines in mediating the depressive-like symptoms that accompany various medical conditions in humans and experimental models of these conditions in animals.
Most immune challenges produce their initial effects in the periphery, but information regarding their presence is almost immediately transmitted to the brain, in a sensory-like process.
Within the brain, this immune-related information activates several areas, and induces glia cells and neurons to release cytokines (such as interleukin (IL)-1, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), which serve as neurotransmitters and neuroregulators (Dantzer et al., 1996; Maier & Watkins, 1998).

 HON Allergy Glossary Interleukin1 (IL1)
Corticosteroids, produced by the adrenals in response to signals from the brain (cortisone), inhibit the action of IL1 and are therefore used to reduce inflammation.
Inducing adhesion molecule expression on vascular endothelium is part of the inflammation syndrome - IL1 induces ICAM 1 expression, while TNFalpha induces ELAM 1 expression on endothelium.
These secretions are involved in inflammation, accounting in part for such inflammatory characteristics as vasodilation, cramps, fever and can produce a wasting syndrome called cachexia.

This can have at least two effects: first, extracellular matrix degradation can facilitate monocyte migration, and second, MMPs are known to degrade IL-1ß, thus down-modulating the local inflammatory response initiated by IL-1.
Interleukin 1 (IL-1) is a general name for two distinct proteins, IL-1a and IL-1ß, that are considered the first of a small (but possibly growing) family of regulatory and inflammatory cytokines.
This complex then recruits IL-1 RAcP (bound to cytosolic serine/threonine kinases) to create a 200 kDa complex with a Kd of 250 pM, which results in IL-1/IL-1 R complex internalization and downstream activation.
